Interview with the Author
Why did you write this book series?
I run Jade Mountain Martial Arts in Katy, Texas. Over the years, I've met hundreds of people who wanted to get in shape but were nervous about getting started. Many of them had tried several times to get in shape at home before mustering the courage to come to my school and try our classes. After talking to so many of them, I decided to write these books to help them, and to give my students a reference for some effective, simple workouts.
Do I need to buy a lot of equipment for the workouts?
The good news is that all you really need for these workouts is a set of workout clothes and athletic shoes. Oh, and probably a towel to take care of all that sweat! The second book shows how to add a few other inexpensive items that can really increase the effectiveness of your training without breaking your wallet.
I'm reeeeally out of shape. Can I still do the workouts in this book?
It's important to check with your doctor before starting any workout program. That said, all of the workouts can be modified and taken at your own pace. You don't have to be an Olympian, just do what you can. Have some fun with it, and you'll be on your way to being healthier and stronger!

I’ve been learning and teaching martial arts and fitness concepts for over 30 years. Not only has it been exceedingly fun for me, but I’ve taken great pleasure in teaching others to enjoy the benefits of martial arts and fitness training. It has been deeply gratifying to hear back from students, even years later, thanking me for helping them get started on the path to a healthier lifestyle. As much as I’ve taught my many students, they have also taught me quite a bit. I’ve had some fabulous teachers both in martial arts and in the fitness industry, so I’d like to thank everyone who has ever spent time on the mats with me in any capacity. Without knowing it,
