About this ebook

In this 21st century era, businesses are fast-growing and dynamic. A great leader is not about being strategic with his business acumen; he is also expected to lead and influence his team to work towards the direction of the organisation. Thus, a great leader without efficient and effective employees will not be able to progress.

However, today's leaders are facing more challenges in leading and retaining talents in their organisation. The reason is simply because we have four generations emerging in the workplace and each generation has its unique working pattern and expectation.

The top-down management of the past seems to be no longer popular and effective; and in order to retain talent and achieve employees' satisfaction, one needs to understand this dynamic workforce imminently.

In this book, the author wants to research on how a leader can be influential and effective to lead these four-generation workforce. I also strongly believe there must be some indubitable leadership principles that can be practised in today's world.

The author has travelled to seven countries, viz. Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam since 2008 to train and coach thousands of managers, senior managers, directors, Vice Presidents and CEOs of various industries.

He has observed certain principles that are similarly being practised by these management teams in different countries for different generations that proved to be effective.

As such, before he embarks into the research of these indubitable leadership principles, he would like to provide a better understanding on these four generations' working patterns. At the same time, he would like to observe some of the different leading styles that could be applied on different age groups effectively.

We cannot deny that leading employees of different age groups is a very daunting task for managers nowadays. Every leader needs to know how to handle different age groups that are made up of different behaviours and communication styles in this dynamic work force.

Nevertheless, he hopes this book will help today's leaders to find the best practices to enable their leadership journey to be more efficient and effective.

In this very emotional moment, I cannot imagine finishing my book without the guidance of my doctoral supervisor, Dr. Joseph LeVesque, help from friends, and support from my family members.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Shirley Howe, for her excellent guidance, caring, patience, and providing me with an excellent atmosphere for doing research.

I would like to thank my godsister, Sally Heng, who encouraged me to experience research in the field and practical issues beyond the textbooks, who patiently corrected my writing and supported my research.

I would like to thank Calvin Goh, who as a good friend was always willing to help and give his best suggestions. Again, many thanks to Miss Toan, Miss Mo, Khun Chusak and other employees in Nestlé, East Sugar Group. My research would not have been possible without their help.

I would also like to thank my brothers and sister. They were always supporting me and encouraging me with their best wishes.

Finally, I would once again like to thank my godsister, Sally Heng, who is always there cheering me on and standing by me through good times and bad.

Praise the Lord for giving me such a wonderful team to make this meaningful breakthrough in my life!

    Abstract

This book explores different aspects of leadership by citing real-life cases of leaders who have portrayed specific aspects of leadership. Specifically, this book concentrates on major traits of leadership, including love with challenges; attitude and a leader’s success, sincerity in leadership, trust in leadership, innovation in leadership, perseverance and gratitude in leadership (Bellingham, 2003). For the purposes of investigating such traits of effective and successful leaders, research on different literature is conducted to ensure that all factors affecting leadership are explored.

To achieve the objectives and goals of this book, interconnection of different parts that determine good leadership is given the utmost focus. This includes developing a relationship between scientific research and real-life situations where leadership has been demonstrated through different ways by different people. Furthermore, this book uses past and contemporary cases of leadership to illustrate different characteristics of effective leadership. This enables me to depict similarities and contrasts in leadership strategies.

The results of the research are revealed through explanations and cases that back up the explanations. In that regard, I intend to bring ideas from different researches and sources to show what is required to be a successful leader. For this reason, the problem of determining what makes a leader successful is solved through cited examples of leaders who have practised particular leadership strategies (Pendleton & Furnham, 2016). This is important to the reader since it shows how one can become a good leader by following examples of people who have been in leadership positions. Moreover, it gives different options in terms of leadership traits that can be applied for different situations. As for the society, this book inspires people to practise leadership traits that are not only beneficial to individuals but the society at large. This is to account that some traits such as trust, perseverance, gratitude and love benefit everyone.

    Introduction

What influences one individual to follow a leader is the main motivation for me in the research of this book. Why do some people comply with one leader reluctantly while others are so committed to follow another to the ends of the earth?

Being involved in the environment of leadership at a very young age, I received no support and mentorship, and that has prompted a series of thoughts in me on how to be effective in leading people. Along the way, I also went through the trial-and-error experiences that could strengthen my leadership mindset and gained much invaluable experiences.

Nevertheless, those real-life challenges were great lessons for me to learn and could never be gained from any university learning thus far.

It cannot be denied that some ideas were picked from books and the experiences of other leaders who had gone through those challenging moments. Effective leaders seem to have certain traits which can attract people to them and make things happen. This finding proved that leadership can be developed over a period of time with proper learning and coaching.

Therefore, the desire to write this book has grown stronger with the aim to help young and even seasoned leaders to recognise; develop and refine their personal characteristics that required an effective leader that people would want to follow them.

A ‘Talent Pool’ project for a sugar producer in China was granted to me in early 2009. The president lamented that he had over one hundred managers and five thousand workers; yet, he could hardly find a handful of effective leaders to help him run the business.

A closed-door session was organised to discuss with him about the essential qualities required of a good leader and he agreed that a leader cannot be developed in a day and needs time to be mentored and coached. Nobody is born a leader, but, a great leader is made! To be a good leader takes a good
