From Overwhelmed to in Control - Jesse McDonald
We all have titles. Mom, military wife, daughter, sister, friend, business owner, photographer, hockey player, homeowner, pet owner, housekeeper, association member, author, person of faith, and the oft-neglected person who needs time to herself. There are so many titles that define who we are or at least part of what we do with our day. A large corporation would hire a single individual for each of these positions, but in my life, they’re all me!
How do we deal with the immense to-do list that comes along with each of our titles? How do we keep up with the deadlines, the appointments, the preparation, and the maintenance, and still have time to enjoy our lives or—God forbid—have time for ourselves? Our inability to answer this question is driving us insane. No wonder Mom snaps at her kids for dumping the box of toys she just finished cleaning up. No wonder you haven’t spoken to your best friend in 4 months. No wonder your home is a mess, your stress level is through the roof, and everyone just wants to escape. Does it really have to be this way? Is this really the life we want?
If you’re reading this book, then it’s safe to say the answer is a resounding no.
You don’t want your life and your children’s lives to continue to look like the sky is falling. In fact, as I sit here and type, my 6-month-old daughter is playing quietly in her saucer beside me. I don’t want her to live a life full of stress and guilt. How do I teach her to live a life of balance, peace, and grace for herself if I can’t do it for myself? This is the very question that led me to explore and discover a better way.
It wasn’t too long ago that I was a stressed-out mess. I was short with everyone, rude, sarcastic, pessimistic, failing at my job, failing at what I thought my responsibilities were in my marriage. I was desperate to escape to the other side of the world. Now, I’ve taken a complete 180-degree turn. I have more time, more energy, more patience, and more overall joy. I’m more excited to get up and start my day, more productive, more gracious, and so much less stressed. That’s not what you typically hear from a new mom with a baby who wakes up every 3 hours in the night. But it’s the truth! How did I do it? Using the tools in this book.
I thought it was just me. But after years of speaking with and coaching people in various stages of life, I realized that I was certainly not alone. So often we spend our lives waiting for things to magically get better. When the kids are older, when I get that promotion, when we retire—then things will be better. Unfortunately, we end up waiting so long, we realize we’ve forgotten how to be happy. The good news is, it’s not too late.
As long as you live and breathe, each day is a new day and a new chance to move toward a better life. I want to help you get there. In this book you’ll find tips and tools to help you feel in control of your life even when the unexpected happens. There are questions in each chapter to help you really analyze where you’re at, where you want to be, and how to get there. You’ll find grace, perspective, and permission to be you. You may even get a healthy dose of reality from time to time. Change is rarely easy, but it WILL be worth it in the end. That, I promise you.
Our mantra here is, Progress, not perfection. Write it down on your bathroom mirror, a sticky note, or the glass on a picture frame. You won’t get it right 100% of the time right away, but that’s OK. So, if you’re ready to stop living under the burden of the mental load you carry, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get started. Say it with me…Progress, not perfection.
Jesse R. McDonald
Mental Health Disclaimer
I want to be perfectly clear that while I have a background in psychology and have done extensive research and practice on topics and tools in this book, I am not a licensed, practicing clinician. Let’s not be so naïve as to think reading through this book once and putting it on the shelf to collect dust will solve all your life’s problems. We’re dealing with big, sometimes monumental, real-life struggles. If you find yourself in that situation, please, seek additional guidance. Just like a car needs a tune-up every so often, so do our minds. Despite what others may try to make you think, there is absolutely no shame in that. If anything, you’re the courageous one for boldly making the changes necessary to reach your goal of a happy life!
Unless you’re a time traveler, you’ve never been at this point in your life before. It’s completely understandable to think when new experiences or situations arise, you may need some wise counsel. I hope what you find in these pages will be a part of that counsel, and will help you navigate these challenges with grace and confidence.
Your life can be so much more than the load of constant stress you’re under right now. You deserve to be free from the endless struggle of striving for perfection every single day and the guilt for having not yet achieved it. You should never feel guilty about wanting to be happy. So, if counseling will help you find happiness, then by all means, please seek it out! If what you find in this book encourages you and gives you strength (which I very much hope it will), then bring it with you everywhere. Do what you need to in order to heal the wounds you carry. We only get to live each day once, so don’t spend it in misery.
How to Read this Book
***DON’T SKIP THIS PART***
I’ve always skipped over this section because I thought it was self-explanatory. Yet here I am including it in my own book. Poetic justice for the how to read
section I guess.
Exercise 1: Create a space
You haven’t even gotten to the chapters yet and I’m already giving you an assignment! Don’t worry, this one isn’t tough. This will help you in many areas of your life. In order to be fully present and gain the most out the content in this book, create a space for yourself to focus while you read. It may be a physical place in your house with this book, your journal, and your pen. All you have to do is grab your coffee/tea/water, etc., and go to that physical place. On the other hand, it could also be a mental place. If you’re on the go a lot, you might not be able to be in one spot to read all the time. Instead, create a mental space to focus. Turn off the phone or put it on silent, put some headphones on so people leave you alone, and take a breath and relax for a couple of minutes before you start reading. Whatever you do, make it a ritual so your mind gets used to preparing for self-discovery. Just like a professional athlete preparing for a game, this routine will help set you up for success.
Sections
There are 7 sections in this book with the idea that you’ll be able to complete one section per week even if you’re busy beyond belief. Following this timeline, your life can be completely different in roughly 60 days. I encourage you not to blaze through the entire book in one week. We’re talking about simple and easy to implement, but life-changing concepts here. You need practice and time to absorb the material. Some sections may not be as important for you, and that’s OK. Just make sure you scan through the chapters anyway and ask yourself the questions at the end in order to really get the most out of the material. They build upon one another as we progress.
Chapters
The bulk of the chapters includes the explanation and reasoning behind each concept as well as encouragement and perspective to help you apply it to your life. Imagine you and I are out for coffee at your favorite local coffee shop. We’re just sitting there chatting as friends, and I’m imparting some of the wisdom I’ve gleaned from years of coffee dates with others dealing with some of the same stressors as you. That’s how the chapters should read. Like a conversation.
Application and Practice
At the end of each section, you’ll find some key questions to ask yourself in order to go a little deeper into that personal application. These questions are dispersed throughout the chapter text as well, so you’ll see them in context. However, if you need to come back, or want to review later, I want those questions and practical tools to be readily accessible to you. AFTER you’ve read through the book once, you can go back to the end of a section at any time for a refresher.
Write it down
I encourage you to use a notebook or journal so you can look at the progress you’ve made and go back and look at your notes again. As you’ll see later in the book, having all of your thoughts out of your brain and in one easy-to-find place is a huge component of what helps keep our brains organized. So, there are 2 options for you here.
1. If you have another journal standing by waiting to be used, grab that one and do the assignments as you go along.
2. If you’re on the go and forgot your journal, grab a piece of paper to take notes.
Two Keys to Making It Happen
