ASSENZA
1976
LE TUE PAROLE
Le tue parole
da lontano
si chiamano assenza
:
colombe nere
sul volo del ricordo.
Preferirei cogliere
nei tuoi occhi
l’abisso
che m’insegna a tacere.
+
YOUR WORDS
Heard from afar,
your words’ name
is absence
:
black doves
on memory’s wing.
Rather would I grasp
in your eyes
the abyss
teaching me silence.
SILENZIO
Tutto
il silenzio genera.
Anche l’amore nostro
mi par nato
da un tonfo d’ali
quando scatta l’aurora.
+
SILENCE
Silence is the father
of all things.
Even our love,
or so it seems,
was born of wings’crashing
at the break of dawn.
SEI PARTITA
Sei partita.
Stuolo di farfalle
funebri
si fermano coll’ali aperte.
Nelle vetrate della memoria
cola sangue
di ferite fresche.
Colli innevati
odorano di morte.
Schizzano uccelli rossi
da banchi nevosi.
Tu voli nel buio,
voli
e sembri sola nell’aria
come un’ala perduta.
Trascino la mia ombra
solitaria
e l’aria si fa croce.
+
YOU HAVE GONE AWAY
You have gone.
A cloud of moths,
deathly,
stops
with open wings.
Down the window-pane of memory
runs blood
from fresh wounds.
Snow-strewn
hills stink
of death.
From snowy ridges dart
red birds.
You fly in the dark,
fly
alone in the air
like a lost wing.
I drag my single
shadow along
and the air becomes a cross.
PARTITA
L’aria palpitò
e il tempo si leccò
la fresca ferita.
+
GONE
The air trembled
and time licked
its fresh wound.
ASCOLTO
Ascolto il mio silenzio
appeso
alla prima pioggia
d’autunno
mentre una nube
nasconde un sole di rame.
L’incanto che s’apre nel cielo
agonizza.
Il verde d’un ramo
ha lo squillo
della tua mancanza.
+
I LISTEN
I listen to my silence
hanging
from the first fall rain.
Clouds hide
a copper sun.
Sky’s enchantment
unfolds, then
it lies dying.
A branch’s green tinge
sounds the bugle call
of your absence.
ECO DI DIO
Il tuo ricordo
è come un uccello
impigliato nell’eco di Dio
che vigila sul nostro palpito.
+
GOD’S ECHO
The memory of you
is a bird entangled
in the echo of God,
watching over
our heartbeat.
PAESE FANTASMA
Senza di te
sono un paese fantasma
che svanisce
nell’aurora che trema
a ogni nuovo giorno.
+
GHOST TOWN
Without you
I am a ghost town vanishing
in the tremor of dawn
with each new day.
ESTATE
Preferisco il declino del sole
alla luce
che infiamma le cose.
Adoro il silenzio
che canta la mia notte.
Lontano da te
amo le criniere
dei miei uccelli muti.
+
SUMMER
I prefer the waning of the sun
to a light
enflaming things.
I love my night’s sung
silence.
Far away from you, I cherish
the flowing crests
of my mute birds.
AL SOLE
L’aria si disfà
in squame fitte.
Mi sciolgo in umido silenzio.
A scatti lenti
come uno straccio
steso sul filo teso
mi dimeno.
All’ombra del mio piede
Loaf, il mio cane,
dorme.
+
UNDER THE SUN
The air falls apart
in scaly clots.
I melt in wet silence.
Twitching slowly
like a rag hung on clothesline,
I shake.
In the shade of my foot
sleeps Loaf, my dog.
A POCO A POCO
Forse anche tu
a poco a poco
non sognerai più
comignoli in fumo
e bimbi assopiti nel buio.
Mi lascerai solo,
solo come mi trovasti
quando svegliasti il mio silenzio.
Anche l’onda
con ciuffi di spume
risucchia alla sponda
il suo vomito d’alghe.
+
LITTLE BY LITTLE
Little by little, perhaps you, too,
will no longer dream
of smoking chimneys
and children slumbering in the dark.
You will leave me
lonely as you found me
when you awoke my silence.
So the wave
in foamy crests
sucks back from the beach
its algae vomit.
SE PENSO
Se penso che m’ami
lontana,
il mio umido muro
dell’ore
sostiene mille profili
del cielo.
+
WHEN I THINK
When I think of your loving me
from afar,
the dank wall of my hours
sustains a thousand
heavenly shapes.
SOGNO STASERA
Un sogno stasera
mi porta in valli sconosciute
dove la tua presenza
disegna un palpito
a ogni cosa che di giorno
emette l’ultimo respiro.
+
TONIGHT, A DREAM
Tonight, a dream
carries me off to unknown valleys
where your presence
traces a pulse
in each being that breathes
its final breath,
come daytime.
MI TRASCINA UN SOGNO
Mi trascina un sogno
al dorso d’un abisso
ove un’anguilla fluida
emette fuoco squamoso;
un gabbiano v’imbatte
e scatta coll’ala
un guizzo furioso,
ma palpitando
s’impasta
poi si discioglie
in un respiro vasto.
Eri tu l’anguilla
fluida, io il gabbiano
destinato a sparire
in un mare d’aria
al risveglio del mondo?
+
A DREAM DRAGS ME
A dream drags me
along the edge of an abyss
where a liquid eel
spews scaly fire;
a seagull flies
into the flames,
wing triggering a flash of fury.
Trembling, now,
it bogs down
and melts
in one long, vast breath.
Were you the fluid
eel, and I the seagull
fated to disappear
in an ocean of air
at the world’s reawakening?
NOTTE MIA
Voli di piume nere
nella notte mia.
La notte dipinge tele di nubi
col fumo,
in compagnia di passeri senza canto
sul ramo.
Getti d’ombra ha lasciato
il sole obliquo.
Tu
macchia di luce lassù.
L’anima sale
le altezze della morte.
+
MY NIGHT
Flights of black feathers
in my night.
With smoke, the night
paints sheets of cloud.
Night’s companions are songless sparrows
perched on a branch.
The slanting sun’s
left puffs of shadow.
You,
a stain of light above.
The soul climbs up
the heights of death.
STELLAZIONE
Ogni assenza è una stella.
Il silenzio
rivolge alla costellazione
il suo orecchio incantato.
Zampilli di sangue
ogni raggio.
Temo che muoia
la notte
e la macchia solare
mi doni un cielo
più nero
della mezzanotte andata.
+
CONSTELLATION
Every absence is a star.
To the constellation,
silence turns
a spellbound ear.
Each ray
spouts blood.
I fear the night may die,
and the sunspot bequeath me
a sky blacker
than midnight past.
SUONO D’OMBRA
Mi sembran dipinte di fumo
le cose.
Il volo del pipistrello stasera
ha un suono d’ombra
che non impaurisce l’anima.
La vanità del tutto
che il silenzio divora
è stanchezza di millenni
quando non ci sei.
+
SHADOW’S SOUND
Things seem
painted in smoke.
Tonight the bat’s flight
emits a shadow-sound
not frightening
to the soul.
The vanity of all things
devoured by silence
becomes a fatigue of millennia
when you are away.
TOVAGLIA DI FUMO
L’aria stasera
è una lastra d’ombra,
una tovaglia di fumo.
Invidio le stelle vicine
nell’aula fredda del cielo.
+
SHEET OF SMOKE
Tonight the air
is a slab of shadow,
a sheet of smoke.
I envy the stars
standing nearby
in the sky’s cold hall.
L’ULTIMA NOTA
L’aria
incenerisce il viola
d’una corolla.
Passeri
pungono
l’ultima nota.
+
THE LAST NOTE
The air
incinerates
corolla’s violet.
Sparrows
pierce
the last note.
MACCHIA
Non sono
che una macchia
di sangue
freddo,
una macchia
nell’ombra
della tua mancanza.
+
STAIN
I am nothing
but a stain of cold blood,
stain
in the shadow
of your absence.
BOCCA DEVASTATA
Dov’è quel tuo sorriso
lieve come una pagina
del vangelo di Luca?
Il tuo seno
che nudo ricoveravo
nel palmo della mano
palpita ancora?
Gli occhi che tu chinavi
sulle illusioni inquiete
della mia libertà infinita
solo ricordi anch’essi?
Compagna di morte
la mia bocca devastata
dal mio stanco grido senz’eco.
+
DEVASTATED MOUTH
Where is your smile,
light as a page
from the gospel of Luke?
Your breast
I sheltered, nude
in the palm of my hand.
Does it beat still?
The gaze you bent
over the restless illusions
of my infinite freedom—
is that, too, mere remembrance?
Death’s companion,
my mouth, devastated
by my tired and echoless
cry.
COME PESA
Come pesa questa pace.
Preferirei gli sterpi nativi,
le foglie già vecchie in età breve.
Anche la morte sbadiglia
quando non ci sei.
+
BURDEN
What a burden, this peace.
Rather would I choose
my native wasteland,
where leaves grow old quickly
in a brief lifespan.
Death itself
yawns
when you are away.
AL CAFFE’
Io
la mia tazza vuota.
Non provo a spegnere
l’ultima cicca,
in un angolo
si smorza da sé.
+
IN THE CAFE’
I,
my empty cup.
I do not try
to put out
the last cigarette butt.
In its corner
it dies down alone.
SOLITUDINE MARINA
