- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A father indulges his son's fascination with his tattoos in this heartwarming family story, sharing the history behind each one. From the tribute to his own favorite story as boy, read to him by his mother, to the reminder of his father's words of wisdom, every one of the father's tattoos has relevance for the boy and his family. One pays tribute to the lovely woman he met (and eventually married), while another chronicles his longest journey (serving in the military overseas). But his favorite is a simple heart with a date, marking the birth of his 'little man,' who decides that this one is his favorite as well...A lovely book, one with charming illustrations and an engaging story, Tell Me a Tattoo Story strikes me as a necessary addition to the body of picture-books addressing modern families. So many parents have tattoos these days, but I rarely see this reflected in children's books, with the notable exception of the family depicted in Australian author/illustrator Bob Graham's Let's Get a Pup! Said Kate and The Trouble with Dogs, Said Dad. I suspect it is still somewhat taboo? Whatever the case may be, Allison McGhee's gentle tale highlights the use of tattoos as a means of personal storytelling, while also spinning a delightful tale of a father and his son, and their larger family. Recommended to anyone looking for engaging picture-books featuring modern families, tattoos, or parents who are serving (or have served) abroad.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5With tattoos having become mainstream body decoration, it's inevitable that we are starting to see kids' books about tattoos. (See also "Mommy's New Tattoo" by Levi Greenacres.) This is a warm and loving story about a Dad who tells his son the stories behind each of his tattoos, from the one inspired by his favorite book to the heart that commemorates the boy's birthday. This is a great early literacy idea: parents can share their own stories about their tattoos or kids can talk about what they know about their parents' tattoos.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I sincerely do not get the tattoo craze and have no desire to participate, but this book helps me understand just a little as a daddy explains his tattoos to his little boy as they wind down to bedtime. I really love the art and picked up this book strictly to get a little more Eliza Wheeler in my life.
