This book is going to take some time to look at the different aspects of Hygge, so you can add them into your own life. We will start with some of the basics of Hygge and what it is all about. In addition, this book will talk about some of the other aspects of Hygge that can be very important, including how to use Hygge to connect with others around you, how to turn your own home into a place of comfort and warmth, and how Hygge can be used at the workplace and especially during the holidays.

Chapter 1: What Is Hygge?

The world we live in today is crazy. Everyone is always running around, trying to get work done, trying to make it to activities, trying to keep the house clean, take care of their families, pay bills, and just keep from falling behind. Our modern world has taught us that we need to always be busy, most of the time and that we need to be working since it follows us not only during our work hours but also at home. We are more connected to our calendars, our phones, and the television than we are to our families and friends, and we always feel like we are a few seconds away from breaking down.

This is a reality for most people. They figure if they can just keep working hard and going at this break neck speed, they will be fine and get ahead and finally reach the happiness that they deserve. But it seems that no matter how hard they work, they never feel fulfilled and happy with this way of life. There is something that is missing, and keeping up with this way of life can end just putting us further behind our goals.

There is a way to combat this disconnection and this feeling of emptiness that many of us are facing, and it comes from Denmark. The Danish people have a term known as Hygge, and following this ideology has helped them to feel happy, connected, and at peace with the world around them. This ideology can follow you into your daily life as well; the more disconnected you feel from other people and the more stressed out you are, the better idea it is to start using Hygge in your own lives.

Describing Hygge is difficult. There is no right or wrong way because it is more of a feeling. You can take steps to bring Hygge into your life, but each person will describe this feeling in a different way. When translated, Hygge means coziness and togetherness, but that isn’t quite right either. It is more of a mental state of mind, a mood that you can be in, rather than a word that is easy to define.
