About this ebook
The aftermath of what happened in the capital has shaken Torien to the core. Battling self-doubt and bitterness, he must find his resolve as he is sent back to Tasso to quell a violent uprising on the Road.
But Torien will need more than resolve to navigate the deadly path before him. His troops are inexperienced and his new adjutant untrustworthy. A series of murder attempts leaves the whole camp on edge. As the threat of mutiny builds, the mission seems doomed before they even reach Tasso—and Torien is beginning to suspect it was meant that way. He and his men are being set up to fail.
With his best friend in the hands of the rebels, his commanding officer refusing to negotiate a peace treaty, and his own men ready to turn on him at any moment, Torien must decide once and for all how much he's willing to sacrifice for an empire he no longer believes in.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Never quite worked for me. Not badly written as such, but frequently suffered from confusing pronouns and unclear politics.I think it's supposed to have been a pseudo Roman historical fantasy, low fantasy if you like - made up places and people but no magic, nothing unusual. The feel is some kind of southern European location, with olive groves, water shortages and the desert across the way. Our hero, Torian, takes a inclination to wander around the old town - being of imperial family (lightly?) he has no concept of personal safety and gets himself stabbed. His sole companion - lover? - fortunately shares his sense of justice and rather than beheading the whole family involved, listens to their take. It appears the local city council are press-ganging citizens and sending them as slaves to work in the salt mines. Torien swears to investigate, which takes him to a fort across the sea, the access point to the desert and salt mines - and more corrupt officials. Unfortunately he fails to fully comprehend the scope of the corruptions and ends up somewhat more comprehensively stabbed, - but in the spirit of all action heroes anywhere, still fighting fit - back in the capital under the Princes' displeasure, before it all ends neatly and tidily. It all just needs a bit more work. The character interactions never quite gel, and when you've got to the point of understanding a secondary character, they disappear. The landscape and the relationships between key places remains somewhat vague, the politics and motivations of the principle movers and shakers behind the scenes even more so. Torien is even more enigmatic, mostly a goody two shoes, out fighting for justice anywhere he see's it's lack., you have to wonder how he survived beyond childhood, let alone growing up in Byzantinely corrupt empire. There are many signs of promise from this author, but this book isn't yet ready. The eArc also suffers from some weird formatting, but I doubt that's the authors fault.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It is a good book? Yes. Is it a great book? No. Here's why.Let me say first that I did enjoy reading this book. It captured my attention and for me, that's a big deal. The story line is unusual and intriguing, the main character, Torien, pleasant to know, and the writing descriptive. My biggest qualm is ease of readability. I found myself often having to flip back through pages to figure out where we were and who we were talking about. Characters showed up at random and were gone just as quickly as they came. This frustrated me as the reader. Really, there is just too many characters and not enough reference to allow them to exist properly in the story line. Continuity seems to be a little ambiguous, as well. In the beginning, Torien has promised a young girl justice for her losses. I assumed this would thread through the story. By the end though, you've completely forgotten this girl and she is hardly mentioned throughout the story, leaving you to wonder if Torien is just some rogue vigilante who got a little bored and forgot his mission. I felt a little shortchanged with the ending; all the loose ends not completely wrapped up, questions unanswered. I love the author's writing style. I think with some tweaking, cutting, and patching this book has excellent potential, its just not quite there yet. I can imagine wanting to read this again at some point and will definitely be keeping my eye out for McCrina's next work.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It is one of those books that you regret finishing - you wish it was longer. No-frills clear prose, good plot, well developed characters...Amanda McCrina is definitely an author to watch. I'll be waiting for the next book.(If possible, please include maps.)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Disclaimer: I was given this book for free as part of the Library Thing Early Reviewer (LTER) program for an honest review. This is a great story. The development of the characters and the storyline kept me intrigued right from the beginning. I originally thought the story got off to a slow start, but by the time I finished chapter 1, I didn't want to put the book down and had a few reading sessions where I said to myself "just one more chapter". The main character, Torien, is very likeable and empathises with many people who cross his path. There were other characters, though smaller parts, such as Alliun, Nico Briule, Valle, Ædyn, Jovan, Chareste and the signo who helped make the story interesting and the role they played in Torien's journey. There are elements in the story where things don't go so well for a number of the characters and I found myself holding my breath waiting to see what happens and hoping that all will be well. Separately, but equally as entertaining was the description of the food. There were several moments when my mouth was watering.Overall I found the storyline interesting and kept my attention the whole time. I liked seeing where the characters and the journey took them and often when I thought things were smooth sailing, a twist would occur leaving me wondering what's going to happen next and how will they manage this situation. I also enjoyed how the story has ended, but it certainly lends itself to a continuation. I want to know what will happened next in the journey and where that journey will take the characters and what actions they will do.
