    Acknowledgments

In my acknowledgments, I would like to thank my family – my husband Craig Allen and daughters, Brittany King Laigen and Mahogany Allen, as well as my grandchildren. I couldn’t have done this book without you guys. You all encouraged me even when I didn’t think I was capable of completing this book. You all believed in me and wouldn’t let me give up, and for that I am especially thankful. Of course, I want to give thanks to the Creator who has awakened and guided me through the writing process. I ascended with each poem, to the point where the Holy Spirit took over and began to speak through me. On each page, the pieces of my life, including my fears, tears, and ambitions are revealed. It’s also a testimony of the emergence of my soul.

It’s been an interesting journey – the long days and endless nights of writing, only to rewrite and to write again. I remember the days when I did nothing but sit in front of my computer from sun up to sun down trying to get each sentence right, until it was finally good enough to share with the rest of the world. Through the process of writing, I have discovered a new lease on life. With the recent loss of my daughter Mahogany La Shae’ Allen, along with the loss of my mother, grandmother, and brother, the Holy Spirit has taught me that I’m never alone, and the one’s I’ve lost are always with me. I also want to thank all the book readers and lovers – the ones with a passion for deep poetry and spoken word, like myself. I hope my words will inspire you to create your own masterpiece, so you can encourage others to live out their dreams. This has been quite a remarkable experience – one that I will never forget. And to all the struggling writers, I encourage you to keep writing. I hope that we all will have a bestseller on our hands one day. Last, but not least, to all the young leaders of tomorrow, I want you to know that the power rests in your hands and it’s up to you do the right thing with the gifts that you have inside of you.

    Poetry for The Heart

    "My poetry is like a box of chocolates;

you never know which flavor you’re

    going to get!"

    Can You Hear Me?

Can anybody out there hear me?

I don’t want you to cheer me,

I just need for you to feel me.

Is there anybody out there listening? Can

you understand the words that are coming

    out of my mouth?

    No, I wasn’t born with a silver

spoon. Nor, do I have my own

horrid stories about the South. But,

just as well I have a story to tell.

Sometimes in my mind, I feel like

    Maya Angelou’s poem: The Mask,

    And, I quote:

"When I think about myself, ha, ha,

ha, I almost laugh myself to death.

My whole life has been one great big

    joke.

    A dance that’s been walked, a song

    that’s been spoke.

Ha, ha, ha, I laughed so hard I nearly

choke when I think about myself."

I heard her words when I was a young

adolescent. And it was with a hint of

dignity – in a form of humility – that

the words rolled off her tongue, and

    made me pay attention.

It was because of her poems I clung to

the belief that one day I would

    succeed.

I was blessed to survive the stormy

weather. And I put the pieces of my

life back together to begin my quest.

As my story unfolds, I can see my

future being told right in front of

me, and when I unveil my mask, I

    ask that you not laugh.

Please be kind, so that you may

find some empathy in my words.

Again, I don’t want your sympathy,

    because the honesty in these

    situations is dear to me.

I want you to hear me, I need you

to feel the words that flow from

    within me.

    Beautifully Flawed

She was beautifully flawed in every way,

just like a diamond that’s been broken,

    devalued and tossed away.

Layers upon layers, woven in the depths of

her soul, lay the diminished remains that

    once made her whole.

And, in each part of her brokenness is a

reflection of loneliness, hidden inside the

shallowness of her emptiness, and anxieties

    that she must rebuild.

Like most secrets or fears, it’s buried down

    in her inner being,
