I have been writing about and teaching forgiveness, hands-on healing and prayer for several years. My brother Charlie expressed interest in reading my newest manuscript, so I sent him an electronic version. When he called to discuss it, his initial reponse was polite but unexcited. Then he spoke passionately; You were at the lowest point of your life. You had your cajones kicked in the dirt and yet you were able to lead your congregation in forgiveness at your son’s funeral. I want to know how you got to the place where you could do that.
To tell that story, I must explain Reiki, The Jesus Healing System and especially the JHS Prayers of Assistance which have opened my intuition, enhanced my healing gifts and empowered both my prayer life and my compassion.

Introduction:
I received a request from my then-pastor, Rev. James Howell, to share a story from the heart for a Lenten Devotional Book at Davidson United Methodist Church. My entry is as follows, but with the Post Script added.
Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these…
— John 14:12
Jesus said follow me.
For me, following means to pray unceasingly, practice hands-on healing, and think with Christ consciousness. But do I think the way He thought? Why not?
Without Unloving, a poem, (2001).
I draw and hold a slow breath well inside me
As I pray for assistance in forgiving all aspects of my life
And does it best serve God for me to... and you can fill in the space...
But I think you get the picture how I feel The Holy Spirit
And very loved and cared for, but somehow out of place
Squeezed between the perfection of God’s grace and
The karma and the struggles of running in my human race.
Pulled between trust and faith and exertion of my will,
Can I live a life without unloving anyone
In word or thought or deed yet continue to feel my emotions?
Ever more mindful and grateful of the extent of God’s grace,
I continue to do the best I can — loving and living today
Standing in front of God’s fan and praying,
Requesting for my ego to be blown, blown away.
Post Script: Should the ego be blown away? Forget Freud. Forget Jung and archetypal definitions. Ego
is that aspect of humanity that believes more in the reality of the physical world than the soul. We are spirits having a physical experience… the Word made flesh. We can hide our thoughts and our emotions, but not our actions and words. We learn from the consequences.
Thomas Merton’s often-quoted I believe the desire to please You does in fact please You
encourages me to believe that practicing forgiveness and hands-on healing pleases Jesus, and always will. Wouldn’t He also be pleased that Jesus Healing System practitioners focus their attention by quietly repeating to themselves I love you and I forgive you
during hands-on healing sessions?
In the parable about the man who needs bread for an unexpected, late-hour guest, Jesus teaches us to keep knocking on the door until God answers our prayers. Praying the JHS Prayers of Assistance is continuing to knock, learning by repetition, contemplating what these forgiveness prayers are requesting, forgiving the collective unconscious, and spiritually cleansing the physical body.
While mainstream congregations have been shrinking in the US, millions have been learning Reiki. JHS offers these churches a Christ-based hands-on healing program and something Usui Reiki doesn’t — healing with forgiveness. As a lifelong Christian, and as a hands-on healer since 1996, I can attest that the spirituality of JHS greatly enhances my religion. Perhaps too unorthodox for the church of my grandparents, I believe JHS will be common practice for the church of my grandchildren. The world needs another voice advocating love, forgiveness, and compassion. Forgiveness Reiki complements Usui Reiki with forgiveness energy.
I ask and pray to send heartfelt gratitude to:
Our VanHecke and Kinney clans
Rev. James Howell
whose sermon asked who had surrendered to Christ.
Meditation clarified my appreciation of Usui Reiki,
but Jesus wanted something more for me.
I prayed to be given whatever it was He wanted me to do.
We’ll call it The Jesus Healing System,
I said.
Three days later I was blessed to receive JHS.

Only God Knows the Truth About Reiki... or Christianity
From October of 1988 until surgery the following April, I was a walking ibuprofin pill. After an L-5 laminectomy, then six weeks at home sleeping on the downstairs pull-out sofa, I returned to work heavier and limping. Doctors told me to do my exercises every day for life or be prepared for more surgeries. The lick the electrical outlet
intensity of pain was gone, but I still had headaches and backaches.
Several years later, while working out, I over-stretched my hamstring and could no longer do the back exercises. My chiropractor, a close personal friend, did his best to help but could only lessen the pain temporarily. Worse of all, the sciatic pain was pressing my fear of surgery button.
Meanwhile at the Davidson College communications office, we were preparing the next volume of the Davidson Journal alumni magazine. A co-worker was writing about former economics professor Jason Thompson ‘72 who had quit academia to teach Reiki (Japanese hands-on healing). I tried it. The first session was relaxing. The second was emotionally unsettling, and on the third Reiki session, the majority of my pain whooshed
out of my left leg. Just three years later, Horace Bush and I co-founded Amplified Prayer Therapy to teach hands-on healing. Horace is a licensed massage therapist with a masters degree in Social Work. Nevertheless, we were surprised that most of the pastors we talked to had little interest in hands-on healing even though it is so documented in stories about Jesus.
The Aura of Forgiveness
As part of our marketing APT, Horace and I went to a Reiki retreat in Michigan. Several months prior to the trip, I meant to write about Reiki, but instead wrote a long forgiveness prayer. Over the next few weeks, more came. Just before the trip, Horace suggested we test drive them
during our day and a half on the highway.
A few hours into our trip to Camp Ronora, we began praying one of the forgiveness prayers. After finishing the first, we nervously laughed and wondered what might happen. A half hour later, we prayed the second. After the fifth, we stopped at the rest area and lay on the ground because our heads were spinning. Nevertheless, we continued to drive and pray all day Thursday, then Friday morning. Not only did we pray all of them, we repeated a few of our favorites.
We arrived at Camp Ronora about noon. Feeling disoriented, we checked in, found our rooms, dropped off luggage, then walked to the lake to get grounded. Being Southern, I was hesitant to dive into a cold Michigan lake. We chose to first wade out ankle deep. With the afternoon sun behind us, we observed rainbow auras rippling out of our shadows in the water in front of us.
Then, to our amazement, little fish swam toward our shadows and lined up in the contours so their heads were in the rainbow of color. Wow! We were stunned. One moment we were praying, and then *surprise* we had fishes outlining our forms in the water. Dorothy, we are not in Kansas anymore! From this pivotal moment, I dedicated my life to the study and practice of forgiveness.
Horace and I felt truly called to bring hands-on healing back to the church. But after getting rejected time and time again by mainstream and conservative churches, we drifted and began teaching the un-churched and the done-churched. Then one Sunday at my home church, Davidson United Methodist, pastor James Howell asked who had surrendered to Christ. All week, that question would not fade. Finally, in a moment of surrender, I prayed Give me what You want me to do.
Three days later, in a white-light, ear-popping and tingle-all-over attunement, I was given The Jesus Healing System, but no manual except for my illusions and delusions.
The Sword of Forgiveness
Several years ago, meditating, I asked questions about forgiveness and received Archangel Michael’s Sword of Forgiveness cuts through the chains that bind us.
Great bumper sticker, I thought, but what the heck does it mean?
Now when getting a haircut and the stylist tells me about her ex and his affair, I see an opportunity for forgiveness to cut through her binding anger and resentment. Every day, such incidents show up and remind me how our unfamiliarity with forgiveness holds us back and keeps us stuck in our cycles of non-loving thoughts and emotions.
Have you ever considered how that thing that happened ten years ago can still make us angry? On the other hand, think about a great meal, a wonderful gift, or even great sex from ten years ago. Why is it so difficult to remember pleasure and so easy to remember pain? Perhaps its because we’re wired to remember things we don’t want to repeat. However, I’ve found that we can forgive/release non-loving feelings, and enjoy life more.
Our memories are complicated. Consider the beauty of a rose. The rose is for many a symbol of love and romance. However, if your father gave your mother roses, then had a fight with her and proceeded to beat her in front of you, wouldn’t it be hard today to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the lovely flower without associating it with the beating? We attach meaning to things. When we are afraid, when we feel our safety threatened, we judge things and label them in order to learn and avoid a similar situation. What we may not realize is that we are very likely to make future decisions based on these fear-based responses. In this case, a child might grow up to think that flowers, particularly roses, are harmful; that same child as an adult might even have physical reactions just being near roses. Through forgiveness, that adult could detach innocent roses from the association with the beating.
Initially, many people don’t grasp the true power of The Jesus Healing System (JHS) and Forgiveness Reiki. But, think back to all the traumas, the dramas, the hurts, the abandonments, including the accumulated feelings associated with what we’ve experienced throughout our lives. Then imagine how alive we would feel if forgiveness cut through these associations and freed us to live and love with less hatred, anger, resentment, sorrow or other forms of fear. Forgiveness can restore our innocence.
Whereas some think that forgiving someone is just doing a wrong-doer
a spiritual favor, JHS and Forgiveness Reiki practitioners quickly learn that forgiveness greatly benefits the forgiver.
Imagine if you created a list of everyone about whom you had ever held negative thoughts. Then consider how much lighter you would feel if you fully forgave everyone on the list. As we begin to understand how we judge one another, we may also realize how forgiveness creates spiritual freedom.
Hurting Ourselves
Since World War II, some psychologists have taken the view that vengeance, or getting even, is like an illness. Those who scheme for long periods of time to get revenge might even be perceived as having chronic symptoms. Even in recent years, newscasters report on outbreaks of violence
just like outbreaks of the flu.
Others view revenge from an evolutionary viewpoint: in early human development getting even punished those who had tried to harm one’s clan and perhaps persuaded those attackers not to do so again. Vengeance may have helped us in our primitive societies, but consider that it may no longer serve us and might even be self-destructive in today’s world. We have other forms of deterence.
Forgiveness helped us evolve from violent creatures to intertwined citizens in a complex society. Be it Alcoholics Anonymous, child care, carpooling, rebuilding after a divorce, or networking for jobs, our lives benefit from our personal support groups.
Many years ago, my mom told me when you hurt the ones you love, you only hurt yourself.
I thought about it and wrote a song called Bang, Bang, Boomerang.
Emotions are like a boomerang: when you hurt (or love) others, it comes back to you. Perhaps we would be more considerate if we recognized that when we hurt others, we create pain in the universal mind from which we all draw.
Christians are raised knowing we are to love our neighbor. But who is our neighbor’s neighbor? Us. If we are respectful, they are more likely to respect us. When conflict happens, we all benefit from remembering that. Frequently, all we need is someone to speak up and remind us. We know what’s right. However, many of us don’t recognize just how many opportunities we have to forgive (or advocate for forgiveness) or to withhold (or discourage) forgiveness.
The inability to forgive is another form of vengeance. Just because someone else chose to behave in a non-loving manner, we do not have to choose to continue living in pain or anger or resentment. We inflict suffering, vengeance, on ourselves when we do not forgive
