The Red Shoes is an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen tale of the same name. It is written by Gloria Fowler and beautifully illustrated by Sun Yung Yoo. In the story a young girl named Karen is given a beautiful pair of shoes by her mother, the town shoemaker. Unfortunately her mother dies soon after completing the shoes. Karen cherishes the shoes as something to remember her mother by. One day a queen and princess come passing through the village, and the princess decides she wants Karen's shoes. The shoes will not come off Karen's feet, and the Queen tells her if she cannot give the princess the shoes she will be back in three days to cut her feet off. So Karen works for three days and nights and makes a new beautiful pair of shoes. When the princess and the queen come back the princess decides she would rather have this new pair. Karen gets to keep the red pair to remember her mother by, and she opens a shoe store full of beautiful handmade shoes. This adaptation has a far more positive uplifting message than the original. In the original Karen is forced to dance by an angel for coveting the shoes. The moral of this story was about taboo desire, punishment and repentance. This adaptation instead makes the story about the bond between a mother and her daughter and the power of creativity and imagination. It is an inspiring story, especially for artistically inclined children. The beautiful black and white pen and ink drawings are really the most powerful part of the book, perfectly conveying Karen's emotions and displaying the true beauty of her creations.

This story was touching. I like that Karen was clever into tricking the princess to wanting a different pair of shoes than the ones Karen's mother made. I also like that Karen realized that it didn't matter if she had those particular shoes, that her mother taught her so many things and would always be with her.

The red shoes features a bit of reality that isn't fairytale at all. A pair of shoes fits the happiness of a little girl but doesn't turn out quite well due to extreme ambitions. It only ends when she takes it off.
