Knife Attacks and Targets: Knife Training Methods and Techniques for Martial Artists, #4
()
About this ebook
The Knife Training Methods and Techniques for Martial Artists series gives the martial arts interested person a solid background on the importance of the knife as a combat weapon, inspires the reader about the benefits of knife training, and provides detailed step-by-step instruction in how to manipulate and defend against a knife with speed, proficiency, and confidence.
Almost any martial art, traditional or modern, can be adapted to knife offense and defense without changing the basic principles of the art. Since the knife is a relatively small and lightweight weapon, many of the same moves and movement patterns you use in your empty-hand art are easily transferable to your knife techniques, and vice versa. The practical lessons you learn by adding knife training to your arsenal include quick reaction skills, physical and mental control, footwork and evasion tactics, distance control, and target precision.
Knife training gives you a decided physical and mental edge and opens new dimensions that will deepen your understanding of the martial arts. Knife Attacks and Targets, the fourth book in the series, covers the benefits of training in knife offense and target precision, the effects of striking primary and secondary targets, and the ethical considerations of using an edged weapon against an adversary in combat. The book also includes a number of training exercises designed to enhance your assertiveness and timing when attacking with the knife.
The full series comprises the following books:
1. Knife Anatomy
2. Knife Carry and Deployment
3. Knife Grip and Manipulation
4. Knife Attacks and Targets
5. Knife Fighting Stance, Footwork, and Dynamics of Motion
6. Knife Defense Basics
7. Knife Defense Dynamics
8. Knife-on-Knife and Multiple Opponent Knife Defense Strategies
9. Knife and Empty-Hand Defenses Compared
10. Knife Training and Advanced Martial Arts Concepts

Knife Attacks and Targets - Martina Sprague
INTRODUCTION
––––––––
As a martial artist, you must consider the ethics of your decision before entering battle. How do you justify fighting, and where do you draw the line? How far are you willing to go to dominate your fellow man or woman, or to defend that in which you believe? How do peer pressure and group mentality influence the decisions you make, your ability to think logically, and whether or not you ultimately carry out the act of combat? How we decide on these issues is often a matter of our backgrounds and traditions, the environment in which we live, and the conditions under which we fight. Sometimes, fighting is purely a decision of self-defense, of do or die, forcing the knife-wielder to execute techniques from close range. Throughout your continued studies, it behooves you to remember the power of the knife and its potential to do damage.
As you continue learning about the knife, consider how we commonly call the martial arts self-defense, even when we use techniques intended to seriously hurt or kill the adversary. From a moral or ethical perspective, the term defense
sounds more correct than the term offense.
We can also think of the relationship between defense and offense as the relationship between strategy and tactics. For example, you can fight from the strategic defensive while simultaneously fighting form the tactical offensive. In short, this means that your strategy, your overall plan, is to defend and protect yourself. But to accomplish this you must use tactics, or specific techniques, that require offense. As already stated, the purpose of the Knife Training Methods and Techniques for Martial Artists series is to gain an understanding of the knife, how to wield it and how to defend against it in order to strengthen your empty-hand skills and increase your understanding of the martial arts as a whole. To acquire this knowledge, you must also learn about the offensive uses of the knife and different types of attacks and targets, and not merely about a variety of defenses you can use against an assailant armed with an edged weapon.
Some words of warning before you proceed: Book 4 of the Knife Training Methods and Techniques for Martial Artists series has as its purpose to explore knife offense, including stabbing and slashing attacks, and the effects of striking various targets. Together with Books 1, 2, and 3, it is the precursor to exploring stance, movement, and defense in greater detail. Remember that the knife is an extremely dangerous weapon even in the hands of an untrained person, and no defense against a knife attack is foolproof. You alone carry the obligation to protect your safety and the safety of those around you. This book is intended as an educational study of training methods and uses of the knife as a combat weapon. The assumption is that your main interest is to gain insight and practical knowledge of your defensive capabilities against knife attacks, and that you will not place yourself in a situation that allows you to misuse the knife. When exploring knife attacks and targets and participating in training exercises:
1. Use training knives and appropriate protection, such as goggles, gloves,
