Section - INTRODUCTION
In this article, we will cover the intricacies of automotive inter-module communication systems or networks. The scope of this section will also go beyond the normal needs of an automotive technician. Hence, this will probably be the most difficult part of this book to comprehend. Be patient and open minded. Always give yourself time to absorb the knowledge and do not be discouraged. Special emphasis will be placed on CAN systems (Controller Area Network). CAN technology, as used today in automobiles, is becoming the standard in vehicle networking and the need for a sound understanding of this technology is fundamental. However, as CAN networks exists today, it is probably not necessary to go into such an in-depth study like will be doing so in here. But, there is a trend towards a totally networked vehicle. By that we mean networking not only the different modules but every single sensor and actuator found in a vehicle. This implementation of networking technology will require a deep understanding of protocols and networking in general. With this in mind, extra time has been devoted to thoroughly cover the details of the CAN system. Future automotive technicians will work on vehicles where all the different networked sensors and actuators no longer put out an analog signal. Such components output a digital network signal and can not be tested with a common multimeter.
This is already happening on some Asian and European automobiles, whereby, important
