About this ebook

Clan: Season 3, Season Finale. Calum’s Farewell
Calum and John stand with the conscripts on a silent moor and wait for the three hundred professional cavalry to charge.

And in the shelter of the woods the Albino sits his horse and waits for the massacre. It gives him no pleasure, that would require feelings and he has none. It is simply business. In return the slaughter of the young men the Spymaster will give him gold so that he can return to Austria and reclaim his birthright.

And if by some miracle Calum survives this day, he knows he has a heart-wrenching decision to make. Find his love and stay in his beloved Scotland, or walk away never to return.

As the English cavalry bring their chargers to a trot, Beatrice York and her cousin Crispen are planning more torment for the highlanders already reeling from the Viceroy's draconian laws.

There has never been a darker day for our hero or for his country.

    Calum’s Farewell

General Richmond forced himself to remain calm. Anger clouds a man’s judgement and fools him into thinking what he is doing is the right thing, even when it is stupid or fatal.

He stepped back a little more into the shadows of the arched gateway and looked across the busy street at the grey stone building. York’s London home. He had another house somewhere, but Richmond didn’t know where or care. York was here, he could see the light between the heavy silk drapes and the occasional shadow flickering across them.

Every part of his being wanted to kick down the door and beat the man to a pulp, but that would qualify as stupid. He hadn’t been watching the house long enough to be sure there wasn’t someone else in with the man, perhaps several someones, and rushing into an unknown situation didn’t sit well with being a military commander. So he waited.

He managed another hour before he swore, strode across the road and banged his fist on the thick door. It was opened almost immediately by a servant who started to ask a question, but shut up as soon as he saw Richmond’s face.

The master is through there, he said, pointing at a door across the wide hall.

Richmond brushed him aside, crossed the hallway and pushed open the door the little man had pointed to.

York looked up sharply from his papers, recognised his visitor and stood up slowly. General Richmond, my dear fellow, how nice of you to drop by, albeit at somewhat a late hour.

Sit down! Richmond said, and stepped up to the big desk.

York raised his eyebrows in surprise, but sat. You seem rather agitated, General. Is there something I can help you with?

Richmond controlled his breathing. "Yes, my dear fellow, there is."

York made a pyramid with his fingers in front of his chin. Anything within my power. And within reason, of course. He smiled. Old friends chatting.

Richmond leaned his knuckles on the desktop to stop them pounding the man. You are most kind. He returned the smile, though it hurt his face to force it. "There appears to have been a… misunderstanding regarding my loyalty to His Majesty."

York lowered his hands to his knees. Really? I’m sure I have heard nothing but good things about your service to the crown.

"Then I’m equally sure you will be quite at ease writing to the Evening Post and telling everyone."

York raised his eyebrows again. I really feel that isn’t necessary, dear fellow.

If the man called him dear fellow again, Richmond was going to wring his neck. He pushed a blank piece of paper closer to him. Humour me. You will do me a great service.

York looked at the paper and then slowly raised his eyes to Richmond’s. Shall we cease this pretence and speak as gentlemen?

Sir, you wouldn’t know a gentleman if one slapped your face with his gloves.

York leaned back in his chair. And is that what you intend? To slap my face with your gloves.

Richmond showed him his gloveless hands. "Since we are speaking as gentlemen. You have circulated a falsehood that I have had clandestine meetings with the Froggies for some supposed nefarious purposes."

York didn’t speak, but the edges of his mouth turned up despite his efforts.

    "I see you
