    In Simple Terms: What is The Ketogenic Diet?

    The Ketogenic Diet is a diet comprising of low-carbohydrate (ideally about 20g per day, but possibly up to 50g), sufficient-protein, and high-fat. This type of diet enables the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates and helps a lot in weight loss.

    Importance of The Ketogenic Diet

    The Ketogenic diets play an important role in medical sciences as it is used as a cure for epilepsy in children. Glucose & insulin are produced by taking a high amount of carbohydrates. These carbohydrates have the ability to transform into glucose and are utilized in stimulating brain-functioning. High carbohydrates force the human body to utilize glucose as the main form of energy, leading into fat storage in the body. In case of low carbohydrates in the diet, the liver converts the fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. These ketone bodies are the reason for passing into the brain and utilize glucose as the main energy source.

    The body naturally initiates the process of ketosis in case of low food consumption. The aim of having a ketogenic diet is to enable your body to a metabolic state that it burns fat. Lowering the carbohydrates & excess of fats, ketones will act as the prime source of energy for the body. Ketones contribute to enhancing many capabilities like losing weight, increase in mental health and in physical performance of the body.

    Advantages of The Ketogenic Diet

    A ketogenic diet has many benefits varying from small scale to a much larger scale. Some of these benefits are addressed below:

    1.     Assists in Losing Weight

    Due to the utilization of body fats in a ketogenic diet, an evident weight loss can be seen. It helps in lowering down the insulin level, which doesn’t let the body to store more fat.

    2.    Enhances Mental Focus

    Low carbohydrates intake leads into lowering of blood sugar. This leads ketones as a source of stimulator to brain-functioning.

    3.    For Treatment of Epilepsy

    Epileptic seizures have been reduced a lot with the usage of ketogenic diets. Previously only children were treated by ketogenic diets, but presently adults are also being treated
