About this ebook

A burning desire to write an Australian historical novel sets the scene for a road trip holiday to Robe in South Australia for research purposes. The novel would be set in the sea port of Robe in Colonial times. What sort of discoveries were ahead? The trip would be from Toowoomba Queensland through the middle of New South Wales across Victoria into the south-eastern corner of South Australia.
Robe was a busy international sea port in Colonial times and the centre of governance for the Guichen Bay area. Robe a town rich in history an ideal place to be the setting for an historical novel. Would I find a main central character to weave the story line around? Would the research yield a harvest of events and people worthy of inclusion in an historical novel? The only way to find out was to go to Robe! Come with me on a journey of discovery.

I am a retired male nurse, married with three grown up sons, who have all left home to pursue their own interests in life. My wife and I moved from Toowoomba in south east Queensland in October 2015 to Brookfield a suburb in Brisbane Queensland (QLD). We made the move to be closer to family. In December 2018 we moved to Nundah Queensland to move even closer to family. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland. Queensland is famous for the Gold Coast and the Great Barrier Reef. Brisbane is situated on the Brisbane River and is known as the 'River City'. It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. I am a Christian and I fellowship with like minded Christians. I enjoy writing, reading my Bible and Christian books. I tend to read non-fiction books in my spare time. My interests are my family, writing, bible study, beach walking, car touring, gospel preaching and bible teaching.

    Preamble

My wife Rachel and I were living in Toowoomba Queensland, Australia in 2010. I was recently retired and was now on a pension. Rachel was working as a Day Care Assistant at a local Child Care Centre.

For some years I had been toying with the notion of writing an Australian historical novel based in the old seaport town at Robe in South Australia. Rachel and I had visited Robe in 2002 with our Ford Falcon sedan and our Jayco Eagle pop top caravan. We liked the historical ambience of Robe and the surrounding areas. Ever since our short stay there I have been convinced that Robe would be a very good setting for an historical novel.

Back in 2005 we sold our caravan and in February 2010 we traded in our Ford Falcon car for a brand new Hyundai Getz 5 door hatchback car. We no longer required our big six cylinder sedan. Our new four cylinder Getz hatchback suited our current lifestyle. Although a lot smaller than the Falcon, the rear seats could be folded down and rolled up against the front seats to give a decent sized cargo area.

The opportunity to go back to Robe seemed to be favourable during 2010. Robe would be a good starting point to research Colonial history in that part of South Australia. The public library at Robe had good resources to look through. Robe had been an international seaport; for imports and exports for the south-eastern corner of South Australia. It had
