      THE OTHER WOMEN

      I believe my wife may be cheating on me, Quinn told him, and to his credit, he only hesitated a moment before continuing to take his notes.

      Looking up, he asked the standard question: What makes you think that?

      Let’s call it a gut instinct, she said as she sat back in the chair, uncrossing and re-crossing her legs.

      He admired those legs for a brief moment, but then any man would.  Any woman would, too, and he was momentarily disappointed that she would never go for a guy such as he.  But this was business, and she was his potential client.  What would you like for me to do?

      I want you to catch her in the act, she said succinctly.  She had a strangely determined look on her face.

      He nodded.  Clients always said that.  He wondered though, if the standard way they did this would apply here.  He stood up and said, Will you excuse me a moment?  At her nod, he quickly went to the side door of his office and stepped outside of it.  He was back almost instantly.  This is Lenora.  She is what we use for bait, he explained as a woman walked in the office behind him and sat down.

      Quinn looked up from her examination of the private investigator’s office.  She was pleasantly surprised to see an attractive brunette with long limbs and a nice set of legs.  Oh yeah, this would work perfectly.

      Dammit Clyde, I hate it when you introduce me that way, the brunette said angrily to the P.I.  She turned to their potential client and held out her hand to be shaken.  Hello, I’m Lenora.  And yes, I am ‘the bait,’ she explained.

      Quinn looked between Lenora and Clyde and back again.  Are you sure this will work? she asked them both uncertainly.

      Oh yeah, Clyde said with almost a leer.  Both women looked at him until he squirmed.

      Lenora spoke first.  Clyde, get your fantasies and leave.  Let the big girls talk.  She made motions like shooing out a naughty child from the room.  With a more professional expression on his face, he left the office through the side door once again, closing it firmly behind him.

      Is he always like that? Quinn asked.

      You have to ignore Clyde.  Like some males, he is just a twitter over the idea of two women together.  Don’t mind him - he’s not a bad guy, just stupid sometimes, Lenora told her and they shared a smile of understanding.

      Do you think this will work? Quinn asked her to be sure.  She didn’t like the proposal and really wondered if this would work out in the end.  Her marriage was riding on it.

      Oh yes, it’ll work, Lenora told her as she smoothed down her tight little skirt, emphasizing her long legs.  It always works, she said disgustedly.

      Quinn could hear the fatigue in the brunette’s voice.  She was curious.  What makes you do this line of work, and how do you know my wife will go for this?

      Am I your wife’s type? the brunette asked to be sure before continuing at Quinn’s nod.  I got into this because my husband cheated on me, she explained and held up her hand when Quinn went to interrupt.  I hired Clyde to prove he was cheating, and he used bait.  With the divorce, I got a nice settlement.  I gave up on men then.  I found in my next relationship that I was attracted to a woman.  She cheated, too, but not until she got half my settlement that I had earned from my husband.  I decided then and there I would never be a victim again.  I decided I also needed to prove something to myself, that I could be independent.  Clyde hired me on the spot.  And the job pays more than you can imagine, she finished with a self-depreciating smile.

      But don’t you feel used? Quinn asked, concerned.

      Don’t you? Lenora countered.

      Quinn had to admit she felt awful to be here at all.  She was angry, though, and wanted to know for sure.  So how does this work? she asked.

      You tell me everything you can about your wife.  Her work address, the names of her friends, the bars she frequents, if she goes to the gym, Lenora began.

      Several hours later - and several thousand dollars poorer - Quinn went home with a sigh of relief.  She was exhausted.  She couldn’t believe how involved this had become.  How demeaning it made her feel.  She knew it, though; in her gut she knew it.  Renee had cheated on her; she was certain of it, even if she had no proof.  Lenora promised the proof, and soon.  It made her hands shake as she unlocked the door to their apartment and went inside.

      She looked around at the place she called home.  She and Renee had decorated it so lovingly.  Swap meets, flea markets, and antique stores had given them countless hours together as they found treasures to decorate their home with.  She was saddened to realize how much this hurt.
