About this ebook

Shay closed her eyes for several seconds trying to regain her senses. After a short time, her lids flew open and she stared up into a pair of the blackest eyes she’d ever seen on a person. Who was this man staring intently at her?
She wasn’t at all certain this was the cabbie because she hadn’t taken the time to look at him when she entered the ride. In her confused state, she did notice the handsome hunk staring down at her was all muscular in build and had black hair a little longer than the average person in New York. His rugged looks almost took her breath away. She sighed deeply.
“Are you all right?” he asked with a faint sound of an accent coming through in his voice. For the life of her, she couldn’t identify what nationality he was by listening to him, but she loved the smooth sounding huskiness of his voice as he continued to kneel next to her on the seat.
“What happened? Are you the cab driver?” Her voice didn’t sound normal and she put it down to the experience of hitting her head.
“No, I’m the man that hit the cab,” he explained. “I called an ambulance to take you to the hospital since you have a large bump on your head. You may have a concussion.”
“But I’m supposed to meet my friend at Maggie’s by four.” Shay made the protest although she didn’t feel much like doing shopping that day. Her head felt dizzy and was still throbbing with pain. She doubted she could walk.
“Don’t worry about it,” he said. “I’ll make sure I find your friend at Maggie’s and tell them. Is it a man or woman?”
“Her name is Katie Warner,” she supplied him with the information.
“What is your name?” he asked unexpectedly.
She supposed he needed her name since they were involved in an accident. There wouldn’t be any other reason he would need to know; although she wished there was right at that moment. Something about him had sent her heart beating at a faster pace.
“Shay Taylor,” she eventually told him raising her head again and locking her violet eyes with the piercing blackness of his. Something caused her chest to tighten and she wasn’t sure if it was from the accidental meeting with the stranger or the accident itself.
“I’m Levi Rodrigues. Here’s my card if you should need anything. I’ll wait for the ambulance to arrive before I go and find your friend. “
For some reason, Shay wasn’t too anxious to see Levi Rodrigues leave. She had just found him and didn’t want the hunk disappearing out of her life, but there wasn’t any way she could tell him this without sounding like a crazy person. The man would surely think she was insane.

    Chapter One

Shay Taylor, a voice sounded through the closed door of her apartment. Are you at home?

Hold on a minute, Shay called out as she wiped her hands on a towel hanging from the ladder she had just climbed down from.

When she opened the door, she saw that it was her friend Katie Warner waiting impatiently on the other side. What in the world are you doing? Katie’s eyes narrowed studying her friend’s paint stained jeans and blouse.

I’m painting, she answered cheerfully. I intend to paint the rooms in my restaurant and catering service the same color once I’m finished here. How do you like it?

Katie tilted her head and studied the off white look of the walls before shaking her head. No, you should paint the rooms at your business a color that will catch a person’s eye. Say a bright blue with lighter shades of blue along each end of the walls to give the rooms a bigger appearance.

That’s a good idea, Shay said thoughtfully. Let’s go into the kitchen for a cup of coffee. I need to take a break.

Katie nodded and followed her through the room into the small kitchenette located along the hallway. Shay removed two cups from the overhead cabinet and placed them on the counter. She poured out two steamy mugs of the black liquid and handed one to Katie. As she claimed a chair opposite Katie, she brushed her hand removing her long flowing auburn waves away from her forehead.

How was your date last night? Katie asked.

If you’re talking about the disastrous evening I spent with Ethan, then don’t ask. I’m wondering what he has between his ears. I’m not sure he was blessed with brains.

    A chuckle followed her description.

Oh come on, it couldn’t have been that bad.

Trust me, it was, Shay went on to explain how she’d had to pay for their tickets to the theater and the food since Ethan had forgotten his wallet.

Maybe he really did forget his wallet, but on the other hand, maybe he intentionally forgot it. Katie laughed watching the grimace lining Shay’s face.

This wasn’t the first time. Just last week he did the same thing. I’ve decided I’d rather stay at home than be made a fool of by him, Shay sighed sipping the coffee with a serious expression covering her heart shaped face.

I didn’t realize this had happened before so I can’t say I blame you.

A thoughtful silence followed Shay’s conversation on her private life. Do you think I’m taking on too much in opening my own restaurant and catering service? Shay changed the subject, no longer
