      DOMINIC LOOKED AT THE three bionic fingers of his right hand and saw only his despair reflected in their titanium. Their flexibility and the skills they restored meant nothing now. He had the apogee of modern limb replacement poking right out of his palm. He owned privately developed biotech the rest of the world had to wait for. Yet the rest of the world lived in sweet ignorance. They lacked the soul-draining temptation. They lacked the tycoon father who bought random body parts for two million dollars each.

      Dominic made a fist, his right thumb and index moving first. Those real digits moved normally, amazingly fast. The three metal fingers bent a second afterward. At least they felt warm. Money could mimic a few of the God-given things.

      He looked away, but saw an even worse reminder: a roomful of other dapper millionaires. Some of their metal bits showed too, and those who had rolled lucky sat tall to display them. At this point in the game, the inheritors hid their faces more than their bionic upgrades. One woman wore a black veiled hat. She had a beige but clearly plastic ear. It turned like an eyeball to anyone who whispered.
