      1. Introduction

      Ithink you will agree with me when I tell you that affordable, comfortable housing can be really tough to find. Many of us spend up to half of our income simply to pay for a place to live, even while living paycheck to paycheck. (In 2013, over three quarters of Americans were, in fact, living paycheck to paycheck and nearly seventy percent had significant debt). It seems, then, that much of the time we spend working is time spent simply earning money to pay down debt and put a roof over our heads.

      I think you’ll also agree with me when I say that life is crazy and hectic and chaotic, and we all need a space to feel peaceful and safe and secure. The good news: you don’t need to feel stressed about paying for a house that’s too big, filled with stuff you don’t need or want. You don’t need to work hard, then see all your money go towards just paying for a place to live. There’s an alternative, and it’s spreading like crazy.

      In this book, you’ll learn about the shipping container house movement, and the way it has brought urban folks, country dwellers, the young, the old, and everyone in between into a new way of looking at living sustainably and inexpensively, focusing on the important things in life, without the emphasis on a bloated, difficult-to-maintain lifestyle that trap many of us.
