    Life’s Lessons

On the book cover sits an old man in his rocking chair. He is holding a baby in his arms and wearing a contented smile on his face. Behind him, on his right side, is a beautiful woman dressed in a floral dress, walking around on the grass. She also looks very happy.

The man couldn’t help but smile as he admired the artwork, which portrayed much more than a simple picture.

Do you think anyone will buy your book today, Grandpa? the young girl asked, breaking her grandfather’s concentration.

I hope so, sweetheart. That’s the main reason why we are here today.

Oh, the child replied then turned her head. It seemed like she was in a completely different world.

Why don’t you go find your mother, Sasha. Grandpa’s got to finish putting up his display.

Without another word, Sasha did as she was told.

Ah, youth, Alan couldn’t help but think. What a wonderful time of one’s life. Alan picked up the book again. A couple of its chapters contained some information about his boyhood, but Alan decided to focus on his three marriages. He felt that he had done wrong to two of his wives—the first one in particular. Part of Alan hoped that this would act as a long apology letter to both Abigail and Jane.

During those first two marriage, some of Alan’s friends told him that he was cheating or chickening out, and he felt that part of the statement was true. Another part made him feel that he was doing the right thing.

Of course, this meant that he would have to tell the truth about the first two marriages and why they’d failed. He also knew that it would be awkward for both Abigail and Jane, as the latter of the two first came into his life at a most inappropriate time.

Alan had divorced Abigail because of Jane, and Abigail did not take well to it, to say the least.

Abigail, being of European descent, had a bit of a temper despite her sweet face. Her parents had come over from Spain, but she was conceived and born in America.

Abigail was an only child, so her parents doted on her, and she grew up to become spoiled, but also somewhat conservative. She ended up getting half of everything in the divorce.

Jane, on the other hand, was a fair-tempered woman. She seemed less staunch and uptight than Abigail, but she also wanted to be the perfect wife. Once Jane had snagged Alan, she wanted to take over where Abigail had failed.

She cooked, cleaned, and even had their son—Jake, who was Alan’s only child. Their marriage was a happy one, and they felt extremely blessed when Jake married Shauna. The birth of their granddaughter also made them feel extremely blessed.

A few months after their daughter was born, Jake had died in a helicopter crash. He and his friend, Paul, were instantly killed when they hit the ground after the motor had gone out.

Everyone was devastated, but the one who took the news hardest was Jane. For some reason, she blamed Alan, and the two of them began arguing.

Fights bounced back and forth, and it only seemed to get worse, despite Shauna bringing over their granddaughter to visit. It all became too much, so Alan and Jane had decided to divorce.

The years got easier, and Alan felt that it was his destiny to be alone. A relationship had been the least thing he was looking for when he saw her at the supermarket.

Jessica had a certain, noticeable beauty. Alan could see it in her creamy, white face, light blue eyes, and dark hair. Some people probably likened her to Snow White, but Alan thought she was far more beautiful.

Taking a chance, which he hadn’t done for years, Alan approached this beautiful lady. He loved the way she touched his hand when she leaned over to talk to him. Jessica and Alan really seemed to hit it off, and that was just during their first encounter.

They had been on many dates since them, but their favorite pastime included going for walks together. Alan liked the way Jessica smiled. He liked the fact that she seemed to be a little old-fashioned, not wanting to rush off to bed, like many younger women her age.

Like both Abigail and Jane, Jessica preferred
