Anyone who passed by the brownstone at 205 Theed Street caught the putrid scent of rotting flesh seeping through the walls. The stench lingered for days, so much so that residents of the neighborhood crossed to the other side of the street to avoid the smell. The house sat at the end of the street, known locally as a haven for stray cats and heroine junkies, and providing nothing happened during daylight hours, it wasn't considered a problem. But now the rot was overwhelming, and someone had to take care of it.
One man, a stranger to the neighborhood dressed in a pastel yellow suit, entered the home on the third night, the only witnesses to this being a couple walking their dog. The filth he discovered inside would shock any normal person. Dismembered limbs, piles of entrails, decapitated heads, and crimson splatter marks littered the interior. Lying in the middle of the carnage was a plain bowl, porcelain white and smooth to the touch, half filled with an oily pool of fermented liquid.
Yellow Suit walked through the aftermath, kicking pieces of flesh and trash from his path. He stopped at the bowl, his breaths heavy as he knelt to pick it up. He swirled his finger along the inside, scooping the reddish-brown liquid, and sucked it clean from his digit. Pleased, he lifted the bowl with both hands and made his exit, not before glaring at the decapitated head of a teenage boy nailed to the wall, mouth gaping, eyes rolled in the back of his head. Thank you, Joseph.
He ripped the tongue from the corpse, placing it into the bowl. Thank you for being you.

Portia stood on the balcony of her brother’s apartment, the passing thunderstorm leaving the air thick and damp. July had been unusually dry this year so the heavy rain was welcome, even if it was only a temporary respite. The sky was clear now, the crescent moon sitting just above the black horizon. This night promised the fantastic and the magical. Portia wanted to taste those energies, opening her mouth to let the last drop of rain fall on her tongue. She licked her lips as the droplet traveled down her throat, hoping something from the night’s energy was now inside her.
Her friend Liz stood behind her, brushing her hands along the front of her black skirt. They’ll be here soon.
Portia glanced over her should, her fingers tapping on the metal railing of the balcony. How long have I known you, Liz?
Seven years now. It was sixth grade.
So, you trust me?
The moist air from outside blew past Portia, forcing Liz to bat her eyes. That’s why I’m here. Are you having second thoughts?
Absolutely not.
Portia turned around, leaning her back against the railing with her arms extended to both sides, her nails still tapping against the metal. You look nervous.
This is my first time. If things go the way you say they will–
They will.
Portia cocked her head, the corner of her mouth curling.
You shouldn’t doubt my loyalty, Portia. I’m here to help. Is there anything else you need me to do?
Her smirk narrowed as Portia pushed off the railing and sauntered back inside the apartment. She cupped Liz’s cheek with her right hand, the sharpened tip of her silver claw-ring pricking the girl’s flesh. You’ve done so much. No, there’s nothing else for you to do.
She lingered on spot, knowing if she pressed a little harder, she’d win a trickle of blood. It’s up to me now. I’ll need to be alone. You can go outside and wait. This is going to take a few minutes to set up.
Okay.
Liz
