INTRODUCTION
Herbal remedies involve the use of plant’s natural ingredients which are usually free of harmful effects to improve overall health. Medicines manufactured by pharmaceutical companies are generally expensive, primarily because they must be processed, advertised and marketed. Pharmaceutical medicine is, in reality, big business. Americans spend about $200 billion on prescription drug every year! Herbal supplements, however, cost much less.
For instance, it cost more than $4 per day to treat arthritis with the popular drug, Celebrex. However, using ginger supplements in its stead cost a mere $0.38 per day! Besides, certain herbs even work better than prescription medicine for certain conditions. Studies have shown, for instance, that it is better to take ginger rather than Dramamine medicine to alleviate motion sickness.
Herbs are actually the precursor to several medicinal drugs that are in use today. Aspirin, the popular pain reliever, was initially extracted from a key ingredient, salicylic acid, found in the bark of a willow tree. As a matter of fact, plants account for about 25 percent of the drugs prescribed worldwide. Of the 252 drugs listed as essential medicine by the World Health Organization, 11% are exclusively produced from plants.
Herbs have been used since ancient times for food and medicine. Being natural medicines, they are healthier and safer than prescription medicine. While there is a prescription drug for every ailment, it is better to go the natural way and not overstress the human body. Using herbs is the practical way to deal with a variety of medical conditions.
Besides, herbal remedies do not merely cover up symptoms. Rather, they try to find the root of the disease and aim to eradicate it. Herbal remedies also help to prevent diseases by encouraging lifestyle habits that promote sound health. Traditional medicine practitioners, Ayurvedic, homeopathic and naturopathic healers as well as herbalists all utilize herbal remedies in their practices.
While natural herbal remedies may cure certain illnesses, it is safer to use modern medicines for treating major illnesses and diseases. In case of severe illness, be sure to seek the counsel of a physician.

Herbs And Herbal Remedies − What You Need To Know

Some types of foods such as garlic are also considered as herbs. Herbs are a natural way of preventing and curing a wide range of ailments and diseases. They are used to treat illnesses and assist bodily functions.
Herbs contain high levels of vitamins, minerals and elements that when consumed and assimilated, help to balance the body in beneficial ways. Besides the biological properties of herbs that enable them work so well, other factors such as the environment in which the plant grew, the harvesting method and the method of processing all contribute to their high level of effectiveness.
Incidentally, each culture throughout the world independently found out that certain herbs in their area could treat specific health conditions. To increase physical strength and stamina, for instance, the Chinese used ginseng herb. In the United States, it was bee pollen; in India, ashwagandha; and in Peru, they used maca root. Even today, herbs continue to play a major part in pharmaceutical medicine.
A Brief History Of Herbs
Herbs have been used long before recorded history. Ginkgo biloba, one of the oldest herbs in history has been in use since the Paleozoic period. It is still one of the top-selling herbs in the United States and Europe. Also, between 13,000 B.C. and 25,000 B.C., Paleolithic people in France made cave painting that depicted herbal medicines.
It is speculated that the use of herbs for medicinal purpose was discovered through trial and error. The ancient people gathered them for food and as they ate them, they found out that it possess certain healing properties. Anthropologists also say that as early as 7000 B.C, people made healing ointments from fragrant plants mix with olive oil and sesame oil. Papyrus Ebers, the World oldest medical document, was compiled
