The Richest Man In Mbasaa - Ebenezer Okorie Atulegwu

    CHAPTER 1

    The Journey to United Kingdom

At the annual meeting of Mbasaa Improvement Union, one crucial issue was discussed for more than three hours.  No indigene of Mbasaa has been to the white man’s country for higher education.  Other communities in the state could boast of having many of their sons and daughters studying various courses in America and Europe, but Mbasaa had no single indigene overseas.

The Elders Forum of Mbasaa had written a passionate letter to the executives of the Improvement Union requesting that they do something urgent about sponsoring one of their children to study overseas.  The elders are worried because sons and daughters of neighbouring communities who studied overseas have been recruited into state and federal government ministries, and they are contributing so much to the rapid development of their communities.

Finally, Mbasaa Improvement Union decided that every indigene should contribute to a scholarship fund for the overseas education project.  In less than two months, all the people had paid their levies.  A selection committee started screening the qualified candidates.  It was at this stage that news filtered into the community.  The first son of Chief Ibeoma Obindu had won a federal scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.  He made the best result in the West African School  Certificate  Examination,  at Ibino  Federal

Secondary School with eight alphas.  The grade-one-distinction recorded by Ikechi Obindu was the best result ever obtained since the school was established.

The leaders of the improvement Union and the Elders Forum were happy with the federal scholarship given to their own son.  They decided that the money already collected should be used to sponsor another son of Mbasaa to the white man’s country.  Chief Ibeoma Obindu quickly secured the visa requirements of his son, and the whole community organized a great send-off ceremony for Ikechi Obindu.  The next day, forty youths from Mbasaa hired a bus and escorted Ikechi Obindu to the International Airport, and he boarded British Airways plane to the United Kingdom.

    CHAPTER 2

Dr. Obindu returns from United Kingdom

Dr. Ikechi Obindu left Mbasaa to the United Kingdom for university education eight years ago.  All of a sudden, he was found at home crossing over from Mbasaa Mystery River on a canoe paddled by himself.

Many people gathered in small groups and discussed the mysterious return of Dr. Obindu who left Mbasaa with federal scholarship on account of his exceptional brilliance.  Two years ago, his father had organized a thanks-giving service for his son who had bagged a Ph.D in Physics.  Before this, he had earned double Master’s degree in Nuclear Physics and Space Science.  His first degree was a combined honours in Mathematics and Computer Science.  His intellectual brilliance and academic excellence had been widely publicized in national and international newspapers.

The whole autonomous community was worried by his unceremonious return, and this gave room to gossips and speculations by enemies of progress.  They alleged that Dr. Obindu is a fake Ph.D holder who ran away from International Police on some unknown charges.  They claimed that he was detained by Interpol but disappeared mysteriously from the prison custody by using African voodoo.  The Interpol sought for him but he had gone with the wind, back to his country-home and was spotted by some kids crossing into Mbasaa on a self-paddled canoe.  This version from the enemies of progress may not hold water as the truth has started coming to everyone in the community.

One thing that has nailed the coffin of Dr. Obindu’s detractors is his immediate appointment as a board member of a federal parastatal which deals on oil and gas.  In addition, in a recent national convention of the ruling political party, he was elected the National Public Relations Officer.  Within six months of his return, he had organized an exhibition of his various discoveries in solar energy, atomic radiations for agricultural development, satellite communications and an engine for an African car.  After this successful exhibition and expositions on his original discoveries, he has been given several awards by the federal government and many newspapers and civil society organizations.  So, why is it that such a patriotic citizen who has gone this far for his fatherland still being criticized by a group of people from his community.

Within the first one year of his return, five water bore-holes were established at different sites in the community and an electricity transformer was installed.  Mbasaa, which was receiving light from a neighbouring community, now has her own transformer.  Dr. Obindu, who now lives at the federal capital city, visits Mbasaa every weekend to attend to the many problems of his people.  Many unemployed youths and graduates are being connected to jobs; the elderly are given free medication
