Will the cost of a new truck be murder?

Will Valentine's Day turn out to be murder?

    Chapter 1

    Wow, she’s gorgeous.

I know! Holly flipped to the next picture on the listing. And for that price, I’m not sure I can resist. She had checked online for any local schooling horses for sale in the area before she went to bed the previous night. This mare had caught her attention so thoroughly that she’d hardly slept. I’ve been texting the guy, and he said I can come look at her this afternoon.

So, let’s go! McKenzie enthused. The lessons are done for the day, and we have some time before the evening feeding.

You really think we should? I mean, I’ve been thinking for a while that we need another lesson horse. There are just enough to go around, but then someone would be short if one of my older geldings came up lame. I wouldn’t want some poor little kid to feel sorry for themselves because they didn’t have anyone to ride.

Her assistant was already walking toward the barn door. Then why have any reservations? You need a horse. You have the money. This girl looks lovely and she’s a good price. Let’s go!

Holly laughed. She had rented the stable and made it her own several months ago, and things only continued to get better. First, she’d made the right decision in hiring McKenzie. The veterinary student was the perfect addition to a successful stable. She was always on time, and she cared about the animals more than anything. She also provided a swift kick in the pants whenever Holly needed it.

Major, the German Shepherd she’d just adopted, understood the phrase, Let’s go. He leaped to his feet from his position near the office door and trotted after them.

You aren’t going, Major, Holly said gently. We don’t know anything about this man’s farm. What if he has a dog that doesn’t like you? Looking into his big sweet face, with ears that couldn’t decide if they wanted to stand up straight or flop over, she couldn’t imagine how anyone wouldn’t like him.

But Major slipped right past her out the door and into the driveway. The chill January wind didn’t bother him as he trotted to the truck, his tongue hanging out in anticipation of the upcoming ride.

I’m not sure we have a choice, McKenzie remarked. You back the truck up, and I’ll hook up the trailer.

I don’t know that we should bring the trailer. I don’t even know if I want to buy her.

Yes, you do. McKenzie headed off toward the horse trailer before her boss could offer any more argument.

I see that everyone around here is happy to tell me what to do, including you, she said to Major as she opened the driver’s side door.

The dog hopped inside and immediately took up his usual spot in the passenger seat. He woofed softly.

Yeah, yeah. I’m coming. Holly hoisted her short frame up into the truck and put the key in the ignition. She turned it, but nothing happened. Hmm. I didn’t think it was that cold. She tried again. The engine tried to turn over, but it still wouldn’t start.

By this point, McKenzie had realized something was wrong and had come back over to the truck. Maybe the starter is bad.

Holly rolled her eyes. Well, that’s no fun.

It’s not that big a deal. Just have it towed down to Mack’s. They’ll look at it and get it fixed right up for you. Here, I’ve got the number saved. McKenzie began scrolling through her phone.

Is that the best place to use? Holly knew that all mechanics weren’t created equal. She’d had her share of shops that tried to rip her off before. Even though she did have some money in the bank thanks to a very generous donation from the daughter of Major’s former owner, she didn’t want to waste it all on being overcharged.

McKenzie nodded as she hit the send button. It’s the best, but also because it’s the only one! I’ll have a tow truck out here in a jiffy.

Holly sighed and laid her forehead on the steering wheel. Major licked her ear and made her sit back up again.

    Chapter 2

Holly wasn’t sure how she hadn’t noticed Mack’s on her previous trips through town. Granted, the mechanic shop was well disguised on the back side of a used car dealership. The brightly colored flags strung between the lights and the huge sale signs didn’t say anything about oil changes or engine rebuilds.

The cab driver threaded through the rows of used cars and around the back to the garage. You need me to wait for you? he asked.

No, thanks. I’ll call if I need someone again. Holly paid him and got out, hopeful that her truck would be fixed. She approached the open door of the garage shyly, uncertain of where she was supposed to be going. Hello?

Be with you in a moment!

She couldn’t tell where the muffled voice had come from. Waiting nervously next to a desk covered in motor oil stains, Holly occupied her time by looking at the other vehicles around the shop. They seemed to be in various states of repair. One had been finished and waited patiently by the door to
