Freddie couldn’t help but smile at the excitement of her little sister, Sara, as they waited in the lobby at the King County courthouse.
And we’ll have flowers, and there will be cake, and everyone will dance!
Sara explained for the fourth or
fifth
time
.
Freddie didn’t mind. She could easily make out the words, despite Sara’s lisp, her overly large tongue making it difficult for the words to come out of her smaller-than-average mouth.
The wedding will be a lot of fun,
Freddie said, nodding, as she stuck her hand out to hold the elevator
doors
open
.
Wait,
she warned Sara when she tried to push forward while an elderly gentleman ambled out slowly.
Sorry,
Sara said, stepping back, closer to Freddie.
Freddie decided not to say anything more about it. Sara generally knew better. She’d mostly learned the rules about elevators and crowded spaces, her Down’s syndrome sometimes making social interaction difficult. She didn’t like being in a small space with many people, feeling so closed in, but she accepted it and paid attention and usually didn’t try to push or shove her way forward.
She was just excited today.
Four, please,
Freddie asked as she stepped closer to the back of the elevator. She drew Sara along with her, putting her arm easily over her sister’s shoulder. Though Freddie was short, maybe five foot three, Sara was even shorter. Sara smelled clean, of the coconut shampoo they both liked, of sweet baby soap that she still had to use on her delicate skin, and the spring day outside.
At least Sara liked to shower regularly, and put on clean clothes, unlike some of her friends. She wore a cute red-and-white striped shirt under her pink jacket, with jeans and sneakers. Red bow-clips held her black
