    Preface

THIS BOOK ALMOST never made it to the printing shop.

The manuscript was shelved in my office for more than three years because other activities occupied my time and I simply forgot about it. When I took a look at the materials, I could not decide what to include in it. Therefore it stayed on for several months more.

Then finally, early this year, I said that the book on soul mates must come out at all cost. So I wrote some more chapters, made minor corrections in the existing materials and sent it to the publisher. I thought then that if I waited for the perfect moment for the book to be completed, it would never see the light of day.

This book is mainly a collection of articles I have written on soul mates, karma and reincarnation over a period of several years in various magazines and in my newspaper column. A few are based on my regular seminar on the same subject.

    Welcome to my sewing class!

That’s how I greeted the twenty participants to my seminar on Soul Mates, Karma, & Reincarnation in my Makati office in the afternoon of March 4, 1989.

The reason it became a sewing class was that one lady participant in my first soul mates class had to tell a little white lie to her husband who didn’t allow her to go to such seminars. She told her husband she was going to attend a sewing class. This inspired Penny Zosa to pun, You rip what you sew.

When I related this to the second batch of participants, it turned out that three of them also had to hide their attendance in the seminar from their husbands and children.

If my husband learned I am attending a course like this, he’d be furious, said Vicky. So I told him I’m attending a friend’s birthday party.

I wondered what the five men in the class told their wives or girlfriends about the seminar they would attend.

The majority of the participants in the second soul mates seminar experienced something deeply meaningful and memorable during the regression meditation I conducted. Many of them had glimpses of the past life connection with their present partner or lover.

Lita S., for instance, saw herself as a German soldier guarding prisoners in a concentration camp. She was a disciplined but rather compassionate soldier. An old woman started running away and stumbled. Lita approached to help the old woman, but another soldier shot her (Lita) at the back, perhaps by mistake.

In this lifetime, Lita reveals that she maintains a very disciplined life and likes to keep things neatly arranged. She recognized the old woman whom she had helped in the concentration camp as the mother superior of a religious novitiate where Lita was a novice. This mother superior is unusually close to her, even after Lita had left the novitiate.

During the second exercise — a past life regression with the current mate or lover — Lita saw a small boy who was very close to her and would always want to be around her. It was not clear from her story what the relationship was with the boy at the time; he could have been her son. One time, she got irritated with his constant bid for attention that she pushed him and he fell down the stairs. She recognized the small boy as her present husband.

Other participants may not have experienced as detailed a past life memory. But most of them obtained meaningful glimpses of the past, resulting in useful insights about their present condition and pattern of relationships. In this sense, my sewing seminar has had some therapeutic value on the participants.

Since then, I have been conducting my soul mates, karma and reincarnation seminar in Metro Manila every month. And on several occasions I conducted it in the provinces and abroad. For many years it has been the only seminar of its type being held in the entire country on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, karma is often misunderstood and used mistakenly. People refer to their lovers or even just their friends as soul mates. Some even refer to their having affairs as a soul mate relationship. So it is about time, I feel, that the concepts of soul mates, karma and reincarnation were clarified before they get out of hand. I hope this book achieves this purpose.

The key concepts in this book may be summarized as follows:

    1. Nothing happens by chance.

    2. We seldom meet a person by accident.

    3. The soul never forgets.

    4. Whatever we do will come back to us in full measure, nothing less and nothing more.

Since it is not possible for us to comprehend soul mates without understanding reincarnation and karma, this book is so arranged that reincarnation is discussed first, then karma and only then soul mates.

A bibliography at the end will be useful to interested readers who may want to read more on the concepts presented here.

    Acknowledgments

EVERYONE WE MEET is our teacher, whether we are aware of it or not. And during this life, I have met a good number of them who have somehow given me lessons to learn and wish therefore to acknowledge them.

First of all I wish to thank my parents Eladio L. Licauco (deceased) and Estela Teotico-Licauco, for putting up with a fourth child who is entirely different from the rest of their children.

Augusto M. Reyes, my boss in the mid-60’s in an American firm I worked with, who introduced me to Theosophy and to the works of the Indian guru, Jiddu Krishnamurti, who has influenced my thinking in the early stages of my search.

Ms. Carey Williams (co-author of several books on reincarnation) who bolstered my belief in past lives with her tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm.

I wish to thank Betina Loman of the Inner Peace Movement and Chita Albert Cullnjieng, who were my first teachers during the most skeptical period of my exposure to this field of study.

I would like to give thanks to a very special friend from a past life, Andrea Cagan of Los Angeles, California, for coming back though briefly into my present life and providing an unforgettable experiential proof of past life connection, and to Nancy Sedletzeck of Terre Haute, Indiana, for sharing with me her remarkable mystical healing connected with our past life.

My thanks also goes to the late Sr. Marie Mabanag of Novaliches, Quezon City, an outstanding though controversial psychic and clairvoyant, who first told me (to my great initial disbelief) about my past incarnation as a monk and keeper of esoteric wisdom in ancient Egypt.

I also wish to thank Conrado Sluggo Rigor, Jr., the reluctant medium or channel of the spirit entity, Ang Suh, for the many enlightening spiritual lessons from that highly evolved entity.

I wish to acknowledge also the help given by my long time assistant Frances T.L. F. Gloria during the initial preparation of the book and for her encouragement and suggestions.

Special appreciation goes to Karina Bolasco, of Anvil Publishing, Inc. for her confidence and trust in this author, and to Ani Habulan, her editorial assistant for her patience with me as I struggled to complete the book.

I would like to give special thanks to my wife, Yolanda, for taking time to meticulously proofread the manuscript. Without her assistance in this regard, the final copy would not have come
