introduction
Yes, anyone can grow LONGER, HEALTHIER HAIR!
The good news is, ALL hair grows. Of course, hair grows at different rates and in different growth cycles, but all hair grows. One person might easily grow her hair to neck length and another might just as easily grow her hair to bra-strap-length, but all hair grows. For instance, our hair used to grow to armpit length easily. After that point, maintaining length was harder. We learned the key to retaining length was properly caring for our texture of hair.
Now, to the bad news—some people may just have to work harder than others to achieve their hair goals. If you’re not retaining length, you are simply not caring for your roots –OR– you are neglecting your ends (chances you are dealing with breakage at the ends of the hair). Technically, the bad news isn’t bad at all. Working harder to retain more length for your strands will empower you to understand and care for the uniqueness of your hair.
Don’t be discouraged. With a good hair care regimen, anyone can retain length. Once we understood what made our hair unique – started treating our ends like friends, eliminating relaxers, and implementing no-heat-summers
– we began to see tremendous growth.
After six years of hair growth, we can tell you the work gets a bit easier and the process is well worth it!
chapter 1:
no heat
We know what you’re thinking! You were so excited about reading our Guide to Longer, Healthier Hair— that is until you turned the page to Chapter One and read the words, No Heat! Yes, we said it, No Heat!
So, don’t forcibly pinch yourself, this is not a dream … don’t vigorously blink your eyes, you are not hallucinating … don’t continually rub your lids, you are seeing straight … and [for heaven’s sake] don’t close the book … YOU CAN DO THIS.
If you enjoy styling your hair often, the words No Heat! can be downright scary. We are well aware that a world without flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers seems intolerably petrifying. We get it. Using heat to style hair provides versatility, eliminates frizz, and creates sleekness. Unfortunately, that sleek shine is only temporary because using constant heat (especially at high levels) is likely the worst part of any daily or weekly hair routine. The good news is, while using excessive heat is probably the most damaging thing any girl can do to her hair, eliminating heat is perhaps the easiest step she can take toward treating her damaged hair and ultimately achieving maximum length.
Think About It
If you use 400° or more of heat on your hair, seven days a week, your hair endures nearly 3,000° of heat weekly. That’s nearly ten times the amount of heat you would use to bake a cake, roast a hen, or broil a chicken. You are literally cooking your hair. Why not heat an oil-filled frying pan on the stove and swirl your hair around in the grease?
Continuous heat will only make your hair straw-like and brittle. High temperatures can strip your hair of much needed moisture, alter its natural curl pattern, modify its thickness, and destroy your delicate ends. As you’ll learn in Chapter One, preserving healthy ends is a major component of growing and maintaining long healthy hair. Each of these reasons is why excessive heat is potentially the MOST damaging action in hair care and the reason why No Heat! is the first tip in our book. If heat usage is a major barrier for you, you are not alone. We know
