Cuban Missile Crisis - Stephan Weaver
Introduction
The Cuban missile crisis was an exceptionally serious situation, which arose in 1962 when the Soviet Union under the leadership of Nikita Khrushchev moved to install medium-range ballistic missiles on the island of Cuba, 90 miles south of the USA. At that time the president of the USA was the Democrat John F. Kennedy who Khrushchev did not understand and whom Khrushchev mistakenly believed could be bullied into giving way in a number of areas.
Kennedy led the response to this incursion with great care and forbearance when many of his military advisers and Republican politicians were urging a militaristic response. The Cuban missile crisis is regarded as an event, which could have led to World War 3 and nuclear destruction to a great extent. Kennedy was ever mindful of this possibility, and his handling of the affair reflected his complete abhorrence of such a possibility.
To his credit, Khrushchev also saw the catastrophic cataclysm which beckoned if the nuclear incursion into Cuba was persisted with and backed away from the abyss—while extracting such advantages to the Soviet Union as a guarantee of Cuba not being invaded and the removal of American ballistic missiles from Turkey and Italy.
Khrushchev's withdrawal in this crisis, although of great benefit to the world, was regarded as humiliating by other Soviet leaders. He was accused of adventurism and promptly removed from power, and what is referred to as the era of stagnation in the short history of the Soviet Union began under the leadership of Leonid Brezhnev. This has been very clearly shown in documents that have come to light since the collapse of communism.
Kennedy only had one year of life left, as he was assassinated in Dallas, in November 1963. There are those who believe that the regime in Cuba was responsible for the president’s death; as revenge for the many attempts on the life of their leader Fidel Castro.
Chapter One
The Cuban Revolution
I am Fidel Castro and we have come to liberate Cuba.
—Fidel Castro
Cuba is a large island, which is located 90 miles south of the United States. Until 1898, Cuba was a Spanish colony. During the time of Spanish rule, there were numerous revolutions and rebellions. Then came 1898, and war broke out between Spain and the U.S., which the latter won easily. After achieving independence, a series of governments ran the country culminating in the reign of Fulgencio Batista, which welcomed American gangsters to run the tourist part of the economy.
Fidel Castro and the revolution which overthrew Batista will forever be linked. Fidel, born in 1926, was the well-educated son of a Spanish immigrant to Cuba.
Fidel first tried to fight the corruption through legal means. That proved ineffective, so he turned to armed efforts instead. Initially, Fidel and his followers were
