    Alpha Bodyguard - Erin McRae

    Chapter 1

Jake dropped into a chair in the formal and ugly conference room. He felt, as usual, like a guest in the home he never wanted.

"Next time, can someone please check my schedule before summoning me?" he asked.

His father had been governor for over a year. That hadn’t had much impact on his already complicated life before, but now that he was approaching graduation — everyone expected him to find a mate immediately — that was apparently going to change. Jake was not happy. He may have been an omega, but his father’s entire staff pushing him around and involving themselves in his personal life was not on his agenda. I have a massive test tomorrow and —

If you’d stop complaining, this will take all of twenty minutes, Andi the Aide said. Jake always thought of her that way because the alliteration made whatever she wanted from him more amusing. Her hair was cut in a neat bob, and she held herself with prim precision. A perfect beta, really, above the fray of all the alpha and omega drama that everyone insisted should consume his life. Jake liked her, usually. He just didn’t like the messages she often carried from his father.

Which is another reason you shouldn’t have made me come all the way across town. I’m not in college to spend time here.

Yes, and your not spending time here comes with conditions.

Jake picked at the frayed hem of his shirt. This conversation was definitely not going anywhere he was going to like. You’d think if my dad cared that much he’d show up to nag me himself.

He didn’t know why he said it. His father cared to exactly the extent he needed to. Jake’s impact on his political aspirations? That mattered. Jake’s ongoing status as an unmated omega who’d had the temerity to go to college? A predictably annoying concern. Anything else was low on his father’s list of priorities.

    Andi looked uncomfortable. Good.

I’d think a lot of things, but that’s above my paygrade. You have new security.

Ugh, why? Jake was trying not to be petulant, but the situation that was revealing itself made that difficult.

Because your father is who he is and you are who you are.

My dad’s been who he is for over a year and I’m almost finished with school, aren’t we done with this by now?

No. We’re not. Andi looked like she was resisting the urge to rub her temples. "Your ability to be in school, despite your circumstances, remains contingent upon your safety and our resources. And the closer you get to finishing school, the more interest you arouse."

Jake had to resist the urge to giggle at her awkward phrasing. I’m on blockers. Although the meds deadened his scent and made him undetectable as an omega, his status wasn’t a secret. So while they didn’t stop the local gossip pages from talking about what marriage might ultimately be secured for the highly eligible bachelor son of the Governor, they did at least stop alphas from reacting to Jake and his scent.

Even if he didn’t like the meds, he appreciated that. Having half of his classmates be biologically driven to get into his pants was a distraction no one needed. That was why most omegas went to college later than alphas and only once they’d found their mates. Otherwise there was far too much risk of attention from unmated alpha classmates, very little of it wanted or welcome.

Andi made her way wearily to the door. Well now you get a security detail too. Congratulations.

Jake sighed. Being the son of a star politician was hard enough without security getting thrown into the picture. And college was hard enough without being trailed everywhere by a glorified babysitter.

Then Andi opened the door, and Jake’s new shadow walked in.

Jake sat up straight as if yanked to attention by strings he hadn’t known were controlling him. He forced himself to slump back in his seat and look as bored and uninterested as he had felt five seconds before. Stupid, stupid blockers. They could stop other people from sniffing out his pheromones, but they didn’t stop Jake from reacting to theirs. This guy was the most unexpectedly alpha alpha Jake had ever encountered.

He wasn’t super tall — maybe 5’11" — or overly built the way alphas in advertisements and movies always were. There was something feline about him instead, a clever glint to his eyes, a wry cast to his smile. His posture may have seemed relaxed, but Jake and his nature knew better. Everything about this man radiated strength and confidence.

Jake clamped his mouth shut so as not to get a gulp of his scent as he moved closer. For one, it was impolite. For
