Yoga: a definition
To start things off right, here are a few things yoga is not: a cult, a religion, an overnight sensation, hedonism, self-torture, or magic. The misconceptions about yoga are many, but the truth is very simple. Practicing yoga is about awareness and relationships, allowing us to become more in tune with our mental and emotional patterns.
Translated from Sanskrit, the word yoga means union
or to join together.
Yoga is a combination of physical (poses and breathing) and mental (meditation) practices designed to help free us from our attachments to the material world, uniting our body and mind. Classically speaking, yoga is the art and science of observing and calming the fluctuations of the mind to realize or inherent divine and interconnected nature,
says David Lurey, certified yoga teacher, trainer, and cofounder of Green Yoga (GreenYoga.org; FindBalance.net). The modern application of this has become a dynamic and powerful practice of the body, mind, and spirit that leads to the same realizations.
That may sound a bit hokey, but you can’t practice the well-known asanas (poses) of yoga without concentrating; your mind and your body are forever connected. All it takes is one good yoga practice to change your outlook for days. Prepare to share the smiles: a happy body and mind brightens not only your day, but also the day of those around you.
While some may think it nothing more than a trend, yoga’s physical practice and spiritual philosophies have been known in the United States since the 1890s, escalating in popularity from the 1960s to today. Even more impressive is that yoga itself is reputed to have been around for 5,000 years (give or take a few centuries). The Rig Veda, one of the oldest books ever written, contains distinct elements of yoga. Dating to sometime between 1500 b.c. and 900 b.c., the Rig Veda contains words that are believed to be many generations older than the book itself, passed down through a strong oral
