    Chapter 1

Ellie took a seat in the waiting room. The smell of fresh blood pervaded the air, setting her senses on edge. She pushed her instinctive reactions back by thinking of chocolate chip cookies and ice cream — her two favourite human foods, more often than not consumed together since her taste buds had changed. Going vampire now would not be wise.

The dentist’s patients looked normal enough. There was no one obviously in a controlled state and desperate to get into the consultation room — which would be a rare occurrence when it came to dental work, in her experience. No. These people weren’t blood-drain junkies. At least, not yet. In fact, to all outward appearances, this was a regular day, in a standard dental surgery, with normal people.

The scent of fillings began to mix with the blood and made the whole experience decidedly less appetising.

Her gaze flicked across the notices on the walls. The messages of doom and gloom for all teeth and how much it would cost to fix them. The signs about what was, and was not, included in NHS care. The staff only sign on a random door at the side that always caused disproportionate curiosity. She sighed. Waiting was the worst. She picked up one of the dog-eared magazines off the low table in front of her and began to flick through it. It was years old. The model on the cover stared back at her as if she were also bored out of her mind from having been stared at for so long. Looking at the pictures couldn’t take Ellie’s mind off what she was about to do. Foolish, some would say, if they knew. Foolish was their lives. What did it matter? Even though she was now a vampire, she was still a firm believer that everyone had to die sometime, that immortal was a myth put forward by those who hadn’t yet come close to a final end and—

    Miss Scarth?

Ellie started. She gripped tight onto the magazine for a second, forcing down her instincts again, lifted her head and smiled.

The woman who had addressed her wore the full ‘Miss Efficient Secretary’ garb and accessories. Her demeanour was stiff and proper. Ellie put a hand to her own hair. She’d left it loose. Her clothes were smart, and brand new, but not that. She stood up.

    This way, please.

She was led into a small office, right next to the solitary consultation room. She could clearly hear the sound of the drill scratching away at a decayed tooth through the wall and felt the need to dash in there right that second. She tried to block it from her mind.

She sat where indicated, in a chair set to a slightly lower height than the woman’s, crossed her legs and smiled again. Thank you for seeing me.

Miss Crose, the woman held out her hand and they shook awkwardly across the desk. Pleased to meet you, Miss Scarth. There was a slight pause, a glance at the paperwork, before, We like to pride ourselves on being an equal opportunities employer. We don’t discriminate.

Ellie almost sputtered. Did she pride herself on being so obviously rude, as well?

You have experience in nursing, albeit a long time ago, but none in dental nursing, is that correct?

Yes. I took a long time off work to nurse my ailing parents. I’d like to get back into something that is more substantial than, well, you know, typing and all that.

Two could play at her game.

Miss Crose’s face soured. It was possibly not the right tactic.

Well, your skills are just what we’re looking for. We don’t need a dental nurse per se, just an assistant to a dental nurse, so you should be able to fit in fine. Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of the interview. The things that really matter. You’ll find we’re not that conventional here, although the trappings might indicate otherwise. So, tell me, what is the worst thing you have ever done in your entire life? And don’t hold back. I’ll know if you’re lying.

Rag picked up another portion-packet of cheesy snacks and poured the whole lot down his throat in one go. Flynn gagged.

What? he said, through a cascade of bits flying from his mouth. You’re the one who says I drink too much blood. I’m balancing out my food. You should be pleased. He grinned. He could be really disgusting sometimes. Human disgusting.

That’s not what I said. You drink too much of our blood supplies. There’s a difference.

Twice as much as any of the rest of them, to be precise. She’d been counting. She wasn’t there just to act as a blood-making machine. It was all very well that her magic seemed to have stabilised a little since her experience of telegraphing with Marchmont, but that didn’t mean she enjoyed her manufacturing duties.

Well, you know why that is? He nodded to Ellie’s empty seat, which was a large cushion on the floor of the container, a mere silhouette in the paltry light of half a dozen battery-powered lamps that were nearly spent. She’d have to work out how
