    Slowly Charles stood with a bottle of wine in hand. Looking to the east, his eyes strained against the rising sun. He cocked his head, trying to hear what his eyes could not see, but his drunk mind was slow to recognize the sound for what it was; his squinting eyes finally saw them. It was too late. He heard the hiss of the arrow just before it struck him in the chest, piercing his heart. Charles Petit was the first to die.

    Before the first line of English Cavalry had exited the camp, a good number of French had thrown down their weapons and raised their arms. In twos and threes they moved away from their weapons, arms in the air as if they had been through this before.

    Devon was quick to act, seizing the opportunity before the French changed their minds. He moved his second line of cavalry into the camp, calling on them not to release their arrows, but it was too late. Their bloodlust was up; several Frenchmen went down before the killing could be stopped as Richard moved toward the center of the camp, calling for Devon's attention. Then, pointing to the west with two fingers, no words were necessary, Devon gave the orders, sending two riders to the west. The men would act as lookouts.

    Richard dismounted to look after one of his wounded men. He heard the scream of a horse that drew his attention away. Richard looked in time to see a Frenchman go down with his horse but not before it had ridden over one of the Clover men. The rider tumbled off the back of the horse whose hindquarters had been hacked into by David Archer's war ax. As the man hit the ground, the contents of the small chest that he held in his hand spread over the ground. Dozens of gold coins spilled out over the ground. The gold caught every man's eyes. It
