Silvia didn’t remember what day it was until she was walking up the steps to The Palace, the hotel where she worked in downtown, San Francisco. Pumpkins, bats, spiderwebs, and witches’ hats decorated the windows of every shop along the street—so many that she’d stopped paying attention.
But it was October thirty-first. Halloween.
Silvia had asked for the day off two months earlier. But one of other members of the housekeeping staff had gone into labor three weeks early, so Francis, their supervisor, had changed all the schedules. If Silvia had remembered that today was Halloween, she would have called into work sick, despite how short staffed

Silvia paused on the broad marble steps, one of the many things that showed just how old the building was, along with the fancy art-deco tile that swooped around the windows. The motto for the hotel, Where Every Guest Is Royalty,
was done in a pretty mosaic made out of blue-glass over
