      Silvia didn’t remember what day it was until she was walking up the steps to The Palace, the hotel where she worked in downtown, San Francisco. Pumpkins, bats, spiderwebs, and witches’ hats decorated the windows of every shop along the street—so many that she’d stopped paying attention.

      But it was October thirty-first. Halloween.

      Silvia had asked for the day off two months earlier. But one of other members of the housekeeping staff had gone into labor three weeks early, so Francis, their supervisor, had changed all the schedules.
