Still Moments in the Presence of God - Baker Publishing Group

    NKJV

    Chosen of God

You are My servant, I have chosen you and not rejected you.

    ISAIAH 41:9 NASB

What can we do to win God’s approval? Nothing! His approval is already ours in Christ.

A newborn baby doesn’t need to jump through any hoops for mom and dad to cry tears of joy that a child has been born. God does not reject us because we make mistakes. Parents don’t reject a child because she stumbles when she’s learning to walk. We serve God not to gain his acceptance but because we already have it.

Our service to God is an offering of gratitude; he has chosen us! We get to be part of the beautiful work he is doing in our world.

God, thank you for choosing me, accepting me, and loving me. I choose to serve you because you care for me. Amen.

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

    EPHESIANS 1:4 NLT

    His Purpose Prevails

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.

    PROVERBS 19:21 NIV

We all have hopes and dreams, but often we fail to consider how the flame burning inside us fits into God’s bigger plan. Imagine how much more confident we would be if we knew that what we so desperately want for ourselves is what God, too, wants for us.

God’s plans are bigger than ours—much bigger. But he has placed in each of us a passion for our particular part in the grand scheme of things.

Your ambitions may be inspired by him. When we give them back to him, we open up a whole new world of possibility.

God, thank you for lighting a fire inside me and giving me a part to play in your magnificent plan. Amen.

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires.

    PSALM 37:4 NLT

    Always Keeping Watch

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

    PSALM 91:11 NRSV

Maybe you’ve wondered what it would be like to have a bodyguard, to know someone is looking after your safety at all times. After all, it’s a dangerous world we live in.

At best, however, a bodyguard’s brand of protection is limited. That’s why God has chosen to give us divine protection. He has assigned his angels to look after us.

Of course, that doesn’t mean bad things will never happen to us. It does mean no one will be able to separate us from God’s love or take away our faith or keep us from fulfilling God’s plan for our lives. What a wonderful comfort that is.

God, thank you for sending your angels to watch over me. Protect me so that I might serve and love you all my days. Amen.

Bless the LORD, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding.

    PSALM 103:20 NRSV

    Angry No More

You will not stay angry forever, because you enjoy being kind.

    MICAH 7:18 NCV

Our heavenly Father loves us—delights in us, in fact. We are his family. Like any loving father, God longs for us to take hold of the things that satisfy, the things that bring us peace and joy. And it makes God angry and sad when we willfully take up the things that do us harm.

God isn’t vindictive. He doesn’t take out his frustrations on his loved ones. But he does hurt when we hurt, and he wants to spare us unnecessary pain and suffering.

All it takes for his anger to subside is to see us turning away from harmful things and walking once again on the right path.

God, thank you for showing your kindness to me. Thank you for being a loving Father who always wants the best for me. Amen.

His anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime!

    PSALM 30:5 NLT

    The Spirit’s Pledge

By his Spirit he has stamped us with his eternal pledge—a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete.

    2 CORINTHIANS 1:22 MSG

Papers are signed. Keys are passed across the table. A valued house is transferred from one person to another in a real estate closing. The transfer is made possible because both parties affixed their signatures to a legal contract.

Those signatures signify the new owner’s promise to make payment and the former owner’s promise to relinquish the property. God’s Spirit is like that signature.

When we embrace Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God’s Spirit enters our lives as a guarantee from God that everything promised to us will one day be ours. But there is one important difference with God. We humans sometimes fail, but God never fails to deliver what he has promised.

God, thank you for sending your Spirit into my life. I’m glad I can count on you to keep all your promises to me. Amen.

The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

    ROMANS 5:5 NKJV

    God Will Do It

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

    HEBREWS 11:1 NASB

Flip a light switch, and the light comes on. Sit down in a chair, and the chair provides support. Step on the brake, and the car stops.

Experience has taught us to expect and rely on these things. Our faith teaches us to rely on the promises of God. We don’t need to see the end of the story to know that all ends well with God. God has never made a promise to his children that he will not fulfill.

You can rest assured of God’s work in your life, his promise of eternal life, and your inclusion in the family of God through your connection with Jesus Christ.

God, thank you for your assurance that your promises are true and reliable. Thank you especially for the assurance I have in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings.

    HEBREWS 10:22 NIV

    Given for You

[Jesus Christ] is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

    1 JOHN 2:2 NIV

Throughout history good people have been murdered in the name of misplaced zeal, paranoid protection of power, or a demented desire to be in the limelight. Political assassinations and random shootings are rampant in today’s world.

Jesus of Nazareth went around healing people and doing good. When he was arrested, he calmly explained that he had no political ambitions or military muscle. He was crucified anyway.

In this case, however, God used the evil actions of misguided people to bring about the greatest triumph of history. Jesus’ death served as the sacrifice for our sins. He opened the door to eternal life, and it stands open.

God, I praise you for turning tragedy into triumph. Thank you for sending Jesus to atone for my sins. Amen.

As for our transgressions, You will provide atonement for them.

    PSALM 65:3 NKJV

    Over All the Earth

Jesus came to them and said: I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth!

    MATTHEW 28:18 CEV

The Bible tells us that Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and earth. What does that mean to us? Simply everything!

It means that no matter what sentence life may hand us—a doctor’s daunting diagnosis, an accountant’s statement of financial ruin, even our own mind’s pronouncement of worthlessness—we can appeal to a higher authority, the court of heaven. And how do we press our case? We remind the court that we carry with us promises backed in full by the great God of Creation.

No matter what we face in life, we need not fear. We can take all our concerns to Jesus.

God, thank you for allowing me to bring my concerns to you. I recognize your authority over every aspect of this life. Amen.

There is no authority except for God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

    ROMANS 13:1 NKJV

    When You Believe

Then Jesus told him, You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.

    JOHN 20:29 NLT

In this world, it’s often difficult to know who we can believe in. Fortunately, there is someone we can reach out to. That person is God. But how do we know he’s real?

When we were created, God placed in each of us a spirit. This is what makes us like him and unlike his other creatures. When we surrender ourselves to him, our spirits come to life, and that living spirit inside us bears witness that he is who he says he is. That’s all the evidence we need.

We don’t have to see with our eyes what we have seen with our hearts.

God, I believe in you. I believe you are fixing the things that are broken in my life and in my world. Thank you! Amen.

Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.
