    Introduction

    Marriage needs a revamp – a restructuring of expectations about what it is and what it requires to be successful. The old measure of success – how long a couple managed to stay married—is an increasingly irrelevant barometer. Duration worked as the measuring stick when marriage was primarily an economic transaction. Today, most couples want more from their marriage than a mutual exchange of economic benefit. They also seek intimacy, romance, friendship and love. The measure of success for these items is primarily qualitative.

    I first conceived of The 5-Year Marriage™ in 1995¹. Back then, it was a fun idea to trot out at parties to get a rise out of people. I generally spun it as anti-marriage, more as a solution for having to stay together forever than a solution for how to stay together forever. Over the years, as the philosophy crystallized, I began to see The 5-Year Marriage for what it is today – an effective tool for helping couples chart a course of together forever in a world where the institution of marriage is crumbling under the weight of overwhelming expectations.

    Every year in the U.S., over 1 million couples marry. With few exceptions, they leave the altar expecting they will be together forever no matter what. And, while the traditionalist in me appreciates commitment, I’ve come to believe that the mindset that marriage must be forever is doing more harm than good. The harm includes what I call the two dangers of forever thinking.

    The first danger is that a person whose marriage is not going well begins to feel trapped inside their marriage. And, what’s the first thing someone does when they feel trapped? They panic, clamor at the walls or fantasize about escape. The second danger is part of the human condition – we want what we can’t have and take for granted that which we do. It’s common to the point of trite to hear about couples not valuing one another, becoming caught in a relationship holding pattern and just going through the motions.
