    Introduction

    Not the Edge, But Passion

Most people are willing to change, not because they see the light but because they feel the heat.

    - John Masson

A year later, I fully understood that it was not the edge and it was also not the heat, but it was passion that pushed me to change direction. I changed from doing a Bachelor of Sciences in Electrical Engineering to a Bachelor of Social Work.

    Pushed by Passion

As a high-perfuming science student in high school, people thought that I was on the right track. I thought so, too. As was expected, I passed matric with very good grades and I registered at the University of the Witwatersrand to study towards a BSc Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2011.

Studying towards one of the prestigious degrees at one of the prestigious universities, I thought I would be satisfied and proud of myself. Unfortunately, for the whole of my first year of study, I never felt satisfied with what I was studying. I had no interest in it, whatsoever.

Of the seven days of the week as an electrical engineering student, Friday was the day I hated the most. It was lab day for Electronics I (ELEN 1001). It was not until June 2011 that I began to ask myself these questions: If I hate electronic labs so much, how much will I hate my job when I start working? Do I really want to be an engineer? Why did I choose this in the first place? Am I really on the right path?

After a process of prayer, reflection and self-evaluation, I realised that I had made the wrong decision. Under pressure, I had chosen the wrong path. Nevertheless, I continued studying. I passed my first year of study and registered for second year in 2012. However, on the first day of the term, I did not attend class because something was pushing me to take a life-changing decision to drop Engineering and register for Social Work, instead.

I did not waste time; on that very day, I deregistered from Engineering and registered to study Social Work. This was the beginning of my pursuit of purpose. As you would expect, people were surprised.

You passed your first year, so why did you drop Engineering? they asked. I explained it to them, but they did not understand my reasoning. My former high school teachers and some of the people from my church refused to believe that I had passed my first year and concluded that it was the difficulty of the engineering courses and my having failed them that had forced me to change. They were not the only ones. Some of the people I knew at Wits believed that, since it is said that Wits Gives you the Edge, I had also changed because of that. This saying is taken by many to mean that Wits offers very difficult courses. Thus changing degrees is often seen as a sign of inability to cope with the difficulty on one course and opting for what is often seen as easier by changing. I tried to explain how I felt, but they could not understand.

People’s inability to understand why I’d changed never made me change my mind. Instead, it made me look deeper inside myself to understand what exactly had pushed me to take such a big decision.

It was not until early 2013, when I started writing my first book "Incubating Excellence: A practical Guide to Achieving Academic Excellence", that I came to a full understanding of the fact that it had been passion that had pushed me to change paths. I alluded to this fact in the book:

At the end of my first year as an electrical engineering student, I realised that I had no passion for what I was studying. My decision to study engineering had not been based on passion. It had been based on motivation - the amount of money paid to engineers and the prestige that came with being an engineer.¹

    - Mthobisi Ndaba

However, I felt that this was not enough to get people to understand why I had changed, or to learn the importance of passion in one’s life for themselves. Then it seemed to me as if God had placed the idea in my heart and given me the Grace to write this book, in which I expound on the power of passion in the pursuit of purpose. My hope it that as you read through its pages, you will learn to acknowledge and value who you truly are, seek to discover God’s purpose for your life (if you have not yet discovered it) and, most importantly, identify your passion and learn to capitalise on its push in your pursuit of purpose.

In the Pages of this Book

In the first chapter, my argument is that fulfilment and true self-actualisation emanates from living a purpose-driven life, which is impossible if you do not know who you are. I also argue that to find out
