All Things Bright and Beautiful:
The Incredible Wisdom of Children
Years ago, I was walking down the street and passed a group of young kids on an excursion with their teacher. I saw one of the youngsters suddenly look up at the sky and declare in a loud joyful voice, Look a sky line!
I looked up to see what he was shouting about and saw a white puffy line made by the jet stream of an airplane. I thought to myself, how delightfully accurate the child was. What an adult calls a skyline
is not actually a sky line. It's the outline of buildings against the horizon. What the child clearly saw was a true line in the sky.
Kids have a remarkable way of seeing things. They are unencumbered by past events, they put together seemingly unrelated items and they enthusiastically share their new discoveries with everyone who will listen. Because of this, and so much more, I believe that children can be our best teachers. And that is why this book is a gem. In a world that is filled with false news accounts and irritating circumstances, perhaps it is time to turn to young kids who frequently tell-it-like-it-is and who often help us to laugh, no matter what the situation and often despite it. Authors Andersen and Tuffy have done an extraordinary job of collecting the bon mots from children, both their own and others'. While this may seem like an easy task for anyone who can comb the internet for hundreds of wise and witty kid's sayings, that is not the case here. This book is a culmination of over 25 years of Andersen personally collecting those memorable words from his own offspring.
And that is what makes this book so special and unlike many others that I've seen in this genre. While based on a common idea…collect the heart-warming and the humorous that come out of the mouths of the very young…these, unlike most others, are fresh, inspiring and a joy to read. Moreover, the book categorizes these charming words in like-minded thoughts. A few of my
favorites are:
Logically Speaking (Justin, age 6: "Daddy, why is it called corners of the world when
