PROLOGUE
You ever try to take your life for a man? Well I have. My boyfriend once made me cry so hard I couldn’t see through the tears. And when I glanced down at his lap his dick was hard. He was sitting on my sofa and he’d just told me that he didn’t know if he wanted to be with me or not. And that if I lost weight, even though I was a size ten, he might reconsider.
Do you want to be with me, Keeper?
he asked me in a calm tone, his dreads hanging at his shoulders.
Through heavy sobs I was honest. More than I love God himself,
I told him.
Then get over here and do something about it.
He made me give him oral sex for an hour that day. Although my jaws were swollen and my throat felt dry I would've done it for six hours if it meant keeping him in my life. But how could he be turned on while my world was spiraling out of control?
These days were always unexpected because the majority of the time he was good to me. Maybe that was all a game. Maybe that’s how he kept me hooked. He would cook after we made love. He would clean the house on the days I got my period and was in too much pain to move. But I never got comfortable because at least once a month he would hurt me for sport.
My best friend always asked me how I could allow myself to be used by him. I hated that question. The truth is I didn’t know I was being used until it was too late. But by then I was so addicted that any attention my man gave me felt like a drug.
After a while it became obvious that my misery was all a game to him. How much can I put her through before she says it's enough? The funny thing is it was never bad enough for me. He could do whatever he wanted just as long as at the end of the night he would hold me. Or so I thought.
The day I actually reached my limit I didn't see it coming. I had been through so much pain that I had become numb. It didn’t take me long to figure out that this time was different. Unlike the other times, I was forced to stand up for myself on this day. It was the only way to save my life.
CHAPTER ONE
*ONE YEAR EARLIER*
I was twenty-four years old and in love for the first time. So what we had problems in the past? Who doesn’t? All that mattered was that he loved me and I loved him.
I wasn’t going to let anybody get me down because today was the beginning of my new life. I was moving out of my mother’s house and in with my boyfriend. The last thing my mother said to me before I left was, Play it smart, Keeper. A man will break your heart if you give him the bat to hit it with.
I never understood what she meant but she said I would understand later. My mother recently had a kidney transplant and the medicine she was on made her think she was some wise poet when she wasn’t.
No matter what she told me or how she felt, nothing would prevent me from moving in with Mickey Kurt. I’d been with him for over a year and whenever we were together I was on cloud nine.
I was parked at the curb of the new house we were renting. Mickey was hanging in the passenger window, while standing on the curb, kissing me before I went to work. Parked behind me was a moving truck and they were bringing both his and my things into the house.
Why you going to work today?
he asked me when his lips left mine. His dreads brushed against my cheeks as we separated. Call off, baby. Let’s have fun and christen our house.
You know I can’t do that, babe,
I blushed. Damn I wanted to stay so badly. Today is the first day of orientation class. You know everybody was up for that job. If I don’t go it’ll look bad on me. Plus Sherry and Niecy would love if I called out.
Last week I was a customer service representative in the call center at Bellevue Mobile. That was before I applied for the supervisor position and got it. Four people wanted the job including Niecy and Sherry, my jealous ass co-workers. But it was me who was called into the hiring manager’s office and told that I interviewed well and got the job. Them bitches were salty as shit too. I guess those two classes I took in business management at Baltimore Community College paid off.
Fuck them, bitches,
he said. They gonna always have something to say. You got that position because you earned it and the only thing they can do is shut the fuck up and call you boss. I’m proud of you, baby. I didn’t tell you that before but I really am.
Hearing Mickey bang on them bitches made my pussy juicy. As I looked at him hanging in my window there was one thing on my mind. I couldn’t believe that after all the fights and arguments we were actually living together.
I met Mickey about a year and a half ago and it wasn’t in person. He contacted the call center because his cell phone was cut off for non-payment. My co-worker, Diamond Phillips, was on the phone with him and he was trying to get her to turn it back on with a promise to pay the following week. Diamond hadn’t been there long so she didn’t have the authority even if she wanted to restore his service. Instead she told him to pay the one hundred and fifty dollar balance in full or there was nothing she could do to help him.
I was sitting next to her at the time and when I glanced over she was crying. Mickey requested to speak to her supervisor and Diamond was so scared that she told me she was about to quit. At that point, she already had twenty people who requested to speak to a manager so it didn’t look good for her job. Our supervisor, Chris Shannon, said if she had one more complaint she would be written up and placed on a warning.
Instead of letting the call escalate, I got on the phone, and the moment I heard his voice I was intrigued. I can’t explain it. I was expecting to speak to some evil person since she was so uneasy but he was funny and had a smooth voice.
I was able to make payment arrangements for him and turn his phone on the same day. He must’ve liked something about me too because he asked if he could have my number. As much as I wanted to give it to him I said no. It was against policy to build a personal relationship with customers and I was sure my call was being monitored.
I went home that night with him still on my mind and I thought about pulling up his account the next day and calling him but I didn’t want to get fired. Plus what if he had a girlfriend? So I left it alone thinking that was the last of it.
Two weeks later he came up to the Bellevue Mobile headquarters. Not only did he make a payment but he also got an employment application. He was hired a week later.
When he was in new hire orientation, despite every bitch at work wearing tighter clothes to get his attention, he was always hanging over the edge of my cubicle asking me if he could take me out. He said I was the main reason he even applied and that he quit his other job in New York. Because he was so tall, his upper body and dreads covered my computer and I couldn’t see. Even though people were talking I loved every minute of it.
After weeks and weeks of trying to go out with me, I remember the day I decided to say yes. I was in the cafeteria getting lunch because I was starving. Normally this lady named Maggie would be there serving but not this day. When I asked for a scoop of mashed potatoes Mickey’s sexy ass was standing behind the counter wearing a white cap and apron.
