Samost / Aloneness / Alleinsein
By Svetlana Makarovič and Boris A. Novak

About this ebook
Through her poetry, Svetlana Makarovič brings to life many beings from Slovenian mythology that had been more or less consigned to the attic of collective oblivion: desetnica (the tenth daughter), kresnik (the summer solstice bonfire spirit), the spring-announcing deity of Zeleni Jurij ('Green George’), Pehtra (the witch or sorceress), sojenice (the Fates), škopnik (the night spirit), and so on.
The pan-European dimension of her work is valid not only at the formal level but also with respect to the artistic worth of her poetry: as the structures of Makarovič’s ballads connect Slovenian heritage with the traditions of other European nations, so, too, does her artistic vision grow from a Slovenian vision of the world, transcending it into a universal account of human destiny. Svetlana Makarovič is a great European, as well as a Slovenian, poet (www.litteraeslovenicae.si).

Dva nista dvakrat po en sam.
Dva nista več. Sta dvakrat manj.
The two ones are not two times one.
The two ones aren’t more. They are two times less.
Zwei sind nicht zweimal je einer allein.
Zwei sind nicht mehr. Sind zweimal weniger.
Pelin žena
Žalik žena pelin bere,
komu ga bo dala,
grenko sivo vino vari,
komu bo zavdala?
Žalik žena pelin bere
s hladnimi dlanmi,
pelin bere, lepo poje
za umrlimi.
V kačjem polju žalik žena
z ozkimi očmi,
vrč pelinovega vina
nese med ljudi.
Žalik žena pelin žena.
Vsak bo sam na svetu,
vsak na svojem kačjem polju
v pelinovem letu.
Wermut Frau
Salge Frau, die Wermut sammelt,
wem wird sie ihn geben,
bittergrauen Wein sie braut,
wem flößt sie ihn ein?
Salge Frau, die Wermut sammelt,
mit den kalten Händen,
sammelt Wermut und singt schön
für die Toten.
Salge Frau im Schlangenfeld
mit den schmalen Augen,
trägt den Krug voll Wermutwein
zu den Menschen.
Salige Frau Wermut Frau.
Jeder ist allein auf Erden,
jeder in seinem Schlangenfeld
im Jahr des Wermuts.
Kukavica
Kukavica mi je zakukala
v sivem svitu pri sivem studencu
pri sivem studencu na sivem drevcu
nakukala meni sivo leto,
sivo meni leto prekleto,
leto prekleto, za sedem let grenko.
Pot bo čez kačja polja vodila.
Na nebu bodo tri sonca žgala.
Ti boš na svetu sama ostala.
Polja pa bodo sam pelin rodila.
Kdaj se pelinovo cvetje zmedi
v židke in bridke kaplje strdi,
kdaj se pelinovo leto konča,
ti boš pa romala, ti boš hodila,
dolgo boš romala, nikdar prišla.
Nikdar nikoli, desetnica.
The Cuckoo
The cuckoo began cuckooing to me
in the grey dawn by the grey spring
by the grey spring from a grey tree
cuckooing to me a grey year,
grey year cursed to me,
cursed year, for seven years bitter.
Through snakefields the way will lead.
In the sky three suns will burn.
You will remain in the world alone.
Only wormwood the fields will bear.
When the wormwood blossoms mellow,
into stiff, bitter drops it coagulates,
when the wormwood year comes to its end,
you will still wander, you will walk,
long will you wander, never arrive.
Never ever, tenth daughter.
Kuckuck
Kukuu rief mir der Kuckuck
im frühen Dämmer am grauen Quell
am grauen Quell im grauen Baum
rief mir herbei ein graues Jahr,
ein graues mir verfluchtes Jahr,
verfluchtes Jahr, bitter sieben Jahr.
Der Weg führt über Schlangenfelder.
Am Himmel brennen drei Sonnen.
Allein wirst du auf Erden bleiben.
Und Felder werden nur Wermut tragen.
Wenn die Wermutblüte abgelegen ist,
in zähe und bittere Tropfen geronnen,
wenn das Wermutsjahr zu Ende ist,
wirst du pilgern, wirst du wandern,
lange wirst du pilgern, ohne anzukommen.
Nie und nimmer, Zehntgeborene.
Sončnice
Jaz pa pojdem na polje,
med rumene sončnice,
tam bom tako dolgo stala,
da bom sončnica postala.
Pa se lep večer stori,
k meni smrtnik prileti,
kljun mi bo zapičil v glavo,
da bom padla v sivo travo.
Ptiči bodo zobali
moje sončnične oči,
moje sestre sončnice
pa bodo sonca čakale,
bodo sonca čakale,
nič ne bodo vedele,
bodo sklanjale glavo
le zato, ker bo temno.
Sunflowers
Yet I go out to the field,
among the sunflowers yellow,
there for so long I shall stand
that a sunflower I’ll become.
Yet a fine evening is in the making,
towards me a mortal creature flies,
into my head he’ll thrust his beak
so that into grey grass I fall.
Birds will peck into
my sunflower eyes,
yet my sunflower sisters
will wait for the sun,
will wait for the sun,
nothing will they know,
their heads they will droop down
only because dark will come.
Sonnenblumen
Und ich geh aufs Feld hinaus,
zwischen gelbe Sonnenblumen,
ich werd dort so lange stehn,
bis ich Sonnenblume werde.
Und eines schönen Abends wird
ein Todgeweihter zu mir fliegen,
in meinen Kopf den Schnabel stoßen,
daß ich fall ins graue Gras.
Die Vögel werden picken
in meine Sonnenblumenaugen,
und meine Sonnenblumenschwestern
werden auf die Sonne warten,
werden auf die Sonne warten,
werden von nichts wissen,
und die Köpfe hängen lassen
nur deshalb, weil es dunkel wird.
Robida
Pogorel je zeleni les,
odnesla reka beli prod,
železni plot je zarjavel,
na grobu je pa sam plevel.
Ondan se mi je zazdelo tako,
da moram odtod, na dolgo pot.
Sem šla, sem spletla venca dva
iz lepega robidovja.
Prvega dam na tihi grob,
z drugimi si čelo opletla bom,
to moji koži dobro stori,
ker so jo preveč božali.
Ti z vencem iz robidovja,
kam si ti namenjena?
Naprej ne vem, nazaj ne smem,
a vsaka pot nekam drži.
Bom romala, bom romala,
dokler robida ne vzcveti.
Brombeere
Zvonovi
Če pa grem na to pot,
saj sama ne pojdem,
z mano gre, kar so videle
moje oči.
Je en veter potegnil
od te onkraj strani,
morda išče prav tebe
med vsemi ljudmi.
Slovo bo jemati
od vseh bolečin,
sem zrasla med njimi,
jih težko pustim.
Tam na limbarski gori
zvonovi pojo,
je četrtek popoldne
pa prav jasno nebo.
Kam gre danes od včeraj,
kam bo danes odšlo,
kje je včeraj od jutri,
kam zvonovi gredo?
Z mano gre, kar so videle
moje oči,
tam znabiti izvem
čisto nove reči.
Jutri včeraj požira,
veter gre med ljudmi.
Je četrtek popoldne
in na gori zvoni.
Glocken
Nehm ich aber diesen Weg,
geh ich schon nicht allein,
denn mit mir geht, was meine
Augen sahen.
Ein Wind ist aufgekommen
von jenseits dieser Seite,
vielleicht sucht er gerade dich
inmitten all der Leute.
Abschied mußt du nehmen
von all den Schmerzen,
ich wuchs mit ihnen auf,
schwer laß ich sie zurück.
Dort auf dem Lilienberg
erklingen Glocken,
Donnerstagnachmittag ist
und recht klarer Himmel.
Wohin geht das heute von gestern,
wohin wird das heute gehen,
wo das gestern von morgen sein,
wohin ziehen die Glocken?
Mit mir geht, was meine
Augen sahen,
dort erfahre ich vielleicht
ganz neue Dinge.
Morgen verschlingt das gestern,
Wind fährt zwischen die Leute.
Donnerstagnachmittag ist
und auf dem Berge läutets.
Ogledalo
Odpre oči in v hipu je zbujena.
Iz ogledal skovikne tuj obraz.
Poskuša sneti masko lastne kože.
Poskuša s svečami pregnati mraz.
Na vratih kljuka škrtne, se premakne.
Deseti kri po žilah zledeni.
Za vrati pa nikogar. Prazna veža.
Kepe teme po kotih. Vonj smeti.
Začuti svoje tuje, potne roke
na žgočih licih, mokrih od snega.
Nad glavo ji zaniha krempelj lune,
in spet obesi culo prek ramena,
odrine duri, se zmrazi in gre.
To noč se je zatekla v mojo sobo,
kjer s svečami preganjam hudi mraz.
Pa to ni maska, to je živa koža.
Iz ogledal me gleda njen obraz.
The mirror
She opens her eyes and is instantly awake.
From the mirror shrieks an alien face.
She tries to strip the mask from her skin.
Tries with candles to drive away the frost.
The doorhandle creaks, she shifts away.
The blood of the tenth one freezes in her veins.
Yet behind the door is no-one. Empty
