      About Velpeau: The HS Journal

      Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau is a heckuva name. This French anatomist and surgeon first described Hidradenitis Suppurativa in 1839. He is remembered simply as Velpeau. And the first name for HS was Velpeau’s disease.

      The National Organization for Rare Diseases credits Velpeau as being the first person to describe Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Sciencedirect.com credits Aristide Auguste Stanislas Verneuil as being the first to describe it in 1854.

      That’s a fifteen-year gap. That may not seem like a big deal, but it makes a difference when estimating the amount of time that HS has been a known disease and the amount of time
