    A Message from the President/CEO . . .

Greetings, and welcome to another quarter of edifying and insightful study. We look forward to joining you for a series of studies in God’s powerful and transforming Word. For over 120 years, we have been motivated by the vision of our founder, Dr. R. H. Boyd, to provide you with the highest quality and most doctrinally sound literature for the African-American Church. This quarter is certainly no exception.

In this quarter, we will turn our attention to a variety of Scriptures that are remarkably relevant in our own day, dealing with the nature of faith and the calling that God places on each of our lives. In July, we will look at the Calling of Prophets. These lessons, drawn from several Old Testament texts, look at several examples of God’s call to His servants. In these lessons, we will notice similarities across these accounts. God called servants such as Moses, Isaiah, and Amos for specific purposes—to deliver His people, but also to warn them of coming judgment.

In August, we will look at Calls in the New Testament. These lessons, drawn from the Acts of the Apostles, call us to consider how God called ordinary people like us to do His will. These stories are full of practical wisdom that helps us to live out the values of the Kingdom of God in our everyday lives.

Finally, in September, we will turn to Signs of God’s Covenants. These lessons, drawn from the books of Genesis, Exodus, and Ezekiel, examine the covenants God made with humanity and with the people of Israel at key points in history. These stories remind us, above all, of God’s faithfulness and of His care for all people.

Praise and thanks be to God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—for the blessings these lessons contain. May He bless you in your studies this quarter.

    In His Service,

    Dr. T. B. Boyd III

    President/CEO

    QUARTERLY OVERVIEW

The theme for this quarter reminds us that God continues to speak to us through God’s written Word. God calls ordinary people from diverse backgrounds to make a difference. From the days of the judges to the prophets to the early church leaders, God called and the faithful answered.

    UNIT I — JULY

Unit I, Calling of Prophets, looks at how God called various prophets at different times for specific purposes. Included in this unit are the calls and responses of Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Amos.

    UNIT II — AUGUST

Unit II, Calls in the New Testament, demonstrates that God continued to work through ordinary people. Their witness reminded the early church that God assures the success of those who will answer God’s call. The unit highlights the calls of Stephen, Peter, Philip, Ananias, and Paul.

    UNIT III — SEPTEMBER

Unit III, Signs of God’s Covenants, a four-lesson study drawn from Genesis and Ezekiel, celebrates four signs of God’s covenant. Promising to renew the cycle of seasons, God creates the rainbow as a permanent reminder of the covenant with every living thing. Circumcision is the sign of the covenant with Abraham and the sabbath is the sign of the covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai. The last sign is the spirit-filled heart.
