Chapter One

Chuck Graham grinned widely at Audrey Abraham. The young girl barely eighteen made her way across the floor to the man who already stole her heart. He wasn't the type of man to take no for an answer, but everyone there had warned her that he was bad news. Still, Audrey couldn't help what her heart wanted, and her heart wanted Chuck. Chuck frequented the saloon up the road, but Audrey didn't care. She felt it her Christian duty to open her heart and her arms to a lost soul that he would find salvation through her example. He picked her up and twirled before landing a kiss on her lips right there in front of everyone. They hadn't had much of courtship. Having been orphaned for the past year she lived last year with her pastor, Bertie and his wife, Frieda. They were just a mere ten years older than her and just getting started with their own lives. Frieda was with child and encouraged Audrey to go out and find her a decent husband. But Chuck Graham was not the man she had in mind. The pastor and his wife had vehemently tried to sway Audrey away from the man, but Chuck Graham had eyes on the pretty young lady and pulled her into his heart before anybody could say or do anything.

Come on, I want to show you what I just bought, Chuck said as he pulled Audrey away from the town. She ran giggling behind him, her boots warm but she didn't care since she was with the man she loved.

Audrey had a crush on the man ever since seeing him walk into the saloon packing pistols on each hip. She heard rumors that he was a bad guy that he ran with a gang, but she didn't believe it for he didn’t seem like someone who had such as an undesirable life. What is it you do? Audrey asked when they first met.

Chuck regarded her as he stood there, his feet apart and swayed as he looked up at the sky and chewed on the straw in his mouth. I'm a cowboy. I make my living being a cowboy. I do things to help ranchers, why do you ask? Chuck replied as he spat onto the ground. Audrey didn't much like that kind of behavior so she turned her face away scrunching her nose before turning back and deciding she liked the man.

Audrey slowed down trying to catch her breath. The heat melted on her as her feet sweated within her boots. Chuck grabbed her and pulled her to him once again landing a kiss right on her lips. Come on, girl, I gotta show you what I just bought, and I bought it for you, Chuck said as they ran along.

They finally made it to the opening where there were a small cabin and a barn off in the field. He ran ahead of her and turned and held his hands out. This be our land. We'll make babies in there, and I'll plant crops out there and will put cattle out there, Chuck said as he pointed in all directions.

Audrey’s eyes grew wide, and she couldn't believe her ears. She already felt he wasn’t doing the proper thing by kissing her as he did and she told him she
