    Chapter One

Hannah stumbled along the dusty street looking for a morsel of food as she crawled off through the back alley behind the tavern. It was there that the cooks would dump the food in a waste bin after the customers and clients no longer wanted to eat. Hannah grasped for a piece of stale bread hidden in the corner of the bin and dusted off the dirt as she quickly stuffed the morsel into her mouth. She nearly gagged for the flavor of mold had bloomed on it, but she shut her eyes and ate it anyway for she was so hungry.

When Hannah's father died shortly after she turned eighteen and before he had a chance to offer her hand in marriage he didn't leave any provisions for his daughter. Hannah had grown up without a mother for her mother had died giving birth to her. And her father had taken to drinking so they lived near the taverns in Elk City, Kansas. Her father had dropped dead suddenly, and the doctor had said it was a bad heart. Hannah tried to stay in the old homestead just outside of town as long as she could. A band of law-breaking cowboys passed by and took the home from her. They looked at her with a desire to take her for themselves, but she escaped and made it to the city for refuge. Hannah had crawled along seeking shelter where she could her face dirty and her hands raw from crawling along looking for any morsel of food that the cats and the rats hadn't come along and taken from her.

At first, Hannah tried to find a church but all the churches in the area had been run off for the town of Elk City was lawless with cowboys, gunslingers, and those who wished to do her harm. She stayed hidden in the shadows living in an old abandoned barn for a while until the roof blew off during a storm. Hannah would sneak over to the Kravitz Orchard stealing apples and pears when they were in season. And now the winter was upon her, and she shivered as her tattered dress didn't keep her warm any longer. Her sore aching throat gnawed at her relentlessly. She knew that the tavern would be closing in the wee hours of the morning, and she just hoped they would throw some good food her way. She shivered as the icy air brushed over her thin body yet her throat felt so hot she thought she would cry. A blast of cold wind blew her light reddish brown hair into her face. She didn't care. She couldn't remember the last time she had a bath or if anybody had done anything to care for her. She wished the icy grip of death would take her and bring her to the place where her parents were so she could find peace and warmth and love again. And just before she thought all was lost blackness took over.
