Introduction - Understanding Diabetes & Common Myths

Diabetes as a disease is becoming much more prevalent thanks to the increase in poor lifestyle choices. It isn't limited to the west however as even eastern countries have seen rises in the number of sufferers. Diabetes is often called a silent disease because it isn't one that is often visible, many sufferers don't even know they have it. Diabetes can be caused by a variety of different things and comes in many forms, though all forms center around the body's ability to absorb energy from our food. To understand how diabetes works you have to understand how the body sources its energy.

When we eat our body digests the food in our stomachs by breaking it down using a variety of enzymes into micro and macro nutrients. These are used in different parts of the body for different jobs, for example protein for muscle building, fat for brain health and carbohydrates for energy. Carbohydrates are complex sugars and starches that are broken down into a simpler sugar form called glucose. Glucose is the body's preferred form of energy because it is simple to break down and use. Glucose is released into the bloodstream so it can be used by different processes within the body as immediate energy or it can be stored for use later, usually as body fat. To store and use glucose the body produces the hormone Insulin.

Insulin is made in the pancreas by Beta cells; these cells are sensitive to the concentration of insulin in the blood stream so they can release it as needed. They continuously monitor the amount of glucose in the blood stream to increase or decrease insulin production. With foods that are high in carbohydrates the glucose level in the blood rises more so the beta cells need to release more insulin to deal with the increased blood glucose. When insulin is produced the enzyme activates other cells telling the receptors to accept the glucose as energy or for storage gradually decreasing the amount circulating in the blood stream and causing the beta cells to decrease their production of insulin in turn.

This process happens continuously day and night depending on what, when, and how much we eat. A normal blood sugar level is between 70 and 120mg/dl though even without diabetes it can be as high as 180mg/dl after consuming high carbohydrate foods. The balance of insulin and energy is what gives us energy to function without either falling into a coma or zinging off the walls. Diabetes is a disease that affects this process by causing an imbalance of the naturally produced insulin to energy process.

Depending on the type of diabetes the process can be affected in a number of ways. This can include the beta cells not functioning to produce insulin at all, or losing their sensitivity
