    Castaway Soul - L.C. Mawson

    CHAPTER ONE

The journey back to Atlantis felt like a death march.

Lyna tried to tell herself that it was no such thing.

    That she was going home.

She’d get to see her parents and younger siblings again.

But she just kept seeing Sam giving her that pleading look, begging her to stay as much as he dared with Ryn in the room with them.

Despite her inner turmoil, she steeled herself, keeping her back straight and her features cold.

She needed to be prepared for what awaited her back home, not pining over some humanoid man who had done nothing but show her a shred of kindness.

Lyna was surprised to be pulled from her sullen thoughts by Ryn placing a hand on her arm.

It took everything she had not to flinch away, realising that he had meant it to be reassuring.

Everything will be fine once you’re home, he told her. Your parents have been worried for you. They’ll be so glad you’re back.

If the words had been meant to put her at ease, they had the opposite effect. Instead, Lyna looked away, her stomach twisting.

She hadn’t meant to make her parents worry, or to put them in a difficult position. She had just been trying to protect her sister...

Thankfully, Ryn’s quiet nature kept him from saying anything else, allowing her to refocus on her composure as they entered Atlantis once more.

Name, the portal attendant said, far more attentive than the one who had allowed Lyna past when she had gone to Earth.

She wondered if that attendant was alright, or if she had gotten them in trouble. She hoped not...

Ryn led her straight back home. Fria was organising the algae at the front of the house, and her eyes widened with shock as Lyna and Ryn approached. She fled inside, presumably to get Lyna’s parents.

As Lyna entered the estate, her parents were already heading straight for her.

Lyna! her parent cried as they swam straight to her, wrapping her in their arms. My daughter, I was so worried.

They pulled away, looking around. Where’s Dyna?

Still on Earth, I’m afraid, Ryn told them. At least, I assume so. Lyna was the only sister I found.

Lyna let out a sigh of relief at Ryn covering for her, biting her lip as her stomach churned over the animosity she had been showing him ever since he had come for her on Earth.

He was covering for Dyna, wasn’t he? And could she really blame him for trying to find his missing betrothed and bringing her home? Even if his tactics hadn’t been particularly pleasant...

Her father approached. Ryn, thank you for returning our daughter to us.

Ryn bowed. It was my honour and duty to ensure the safety of my betrothed.

Then we thank you for your diligence. But if you would excuse us...

Of course, Ryn said before leaving, giving Lyna one last look that she couldn’t decipher.

As soon as Ryn had left, Lyna felt the familiar vibration of her father’s siren song around her, causing her scales to itch and her stomach to quake.

When I told you not to pick a fight with Hian, what part of that did you think meant it would be okay to attack him and abscond to Earth with your sister?! her father demanded, causing Lyna to flinch.

There was no way she was getting out of this without telling the whole truth.

Gial, her parent said, putting their hand on her father’s arm. Can’t we just be glad that she’s home?

Not when she’s the reason she and Dyna left in the first place!

Lyna glared at her father, her irritation and anger quickly overwhelming her good sense. Why are you treating me like a stupid child, who would do something like this just because she felt like it?! Do you think I attacked Hian and fled with Dyna just because I don’t like him? What kind of idiot do you take me for?

Her father returned her glare in full force, and Lyna realised that she was counteracting his siren song with her own, keeping herself grounded.

I defended Dyna from him because he was about to strike her, she told him. I know that you don’t want to believe that he’s that kind of Mer, but I saw it with my own two eyes.

You said ‘about’ to strike her. Did you see Hian actually hit her?

No, I wasn’t going to wait until after to do something!

Her father sighed, shaking his head. I believe that you believe that he was about to hit her, Lyna. You’ve always distrusted him, and Hian did say that things got heated between them. But if you didn’t actually see him lay a hand on her...

So, what? Lyna demanded. I should have waited until after he hit her? You would have believed me then? You didn’t see her when we got to Earth... I’ve never seen her so shaken...

Because you had just dragged her to a dangerous realm over a little spat with her mate!

She’s covered in scars! Lyna screamed, her siren song bursting from her throat in a blast that knocked her father back a couple of inches.

Not much, but enough to shock him.

Most of her scales are discoloured, she told him, as if she’s grown new ones over and over again. She was seen by healers on Earth, those familiar with Mers, and they confirmed that she’s sustained near constant injuries for months.

Her father shook his head in disbelief, though his anger had obviously faded. You can’t know that they’re from... from someone hurting her. Dyna was always clumsy. She was never a great swimmer, you know that.

Lyna calmed a little, given that her father’s siren song had stopped howling at her. But she was never covered in scars. A few scuffed scales maybe, but nothing like this.

He simply shook his head again, any doubt on his face disappearing as he frowned once more. No, Hian explained this. He and Dyna had been trying to have children and failing. It took its toll on Dyna, and she was constantly exhausted. That’s all you saw.

    "Father, she told me-"

You heard what you wanted to hear, he told her, sharply. What you always wanted to hear. You hated that Dyna had to let someone else into her life, and you twisted her minor troubles with her mate into something you could use to justify tearing them apart.

Lyna felt as if she had been slapped, her eyes stinging with tears at her father’s words.

If Dyna needed help, she would have come to us, he continued. "I indulged you when you wanted to take her to a healer, and they found nothing. And because you didn’t like what you heard, you engineered a situation where you could take her to Earth, to be seen by healers who couldn’t possibly properly understand Mer physiology, just so that you could get the answer you wanted.

But it is no matter. Dyna is Hian’s mate, and therefore, his responsibility. He will find her and return her home in due time, and we can put this all behind us. Thankfully, he doesn’t seem to have realised exactly who took Dyna, and despite your actions, I doubt your sister would ever implicate you in this whole mess. Even if you deserve it.

He glared at Lyna, his siren song building once more. "Now that you have returned home, you will return to your duties as normal and not speak a single word of this to anyone, am I clear?"

Lyna nodded, knowing that she wasn’t going to get anywhere by continuing the argument.

And if I get even the slightest sense that you are anything but civil to Hian, I swear, I shall disown you, and you can return to Earth for good while Jial takes your place as my Primary Heir.

Lyna simply nodded again, only half sure that he was exaggerating...

Her father flew off in a storm of swirling water.

Her parent sighed next to her.

I know that he was a little harsh, but he’s just worried, they said. And he has a point. About you not antagonising Hian, I mean. I think we both know that you’re lucky that he didn’t realise that it was you attacking him. Or else is keeping it to himself. It’s best if you keep your head down and don’t do anything to tempt him to accuse you.

Lyna sighed, realising that she would truly get no help from her parents.

Okay. I’ll keep my head down. I promise.
