    A Perfect Day In Ljubljana

    9.00am

    Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast at your hotel, then head for Prešerenov trg. If you would prefer breakfast in a café, a few yards east of the square along Petkovskovo nabrezje is Café Promenada where the outside tables have great views over the river.

    10.00am

    The market and the cathedral

Cross Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) and turn left along the river. Visit the cathedral, Plečnik’s Central Market (go downstairs for the fish market) and Dragon Bridge. Then take a stroll through the main market square.

    11.00am

    Castle climb

From Krekov trg on the far side of the market, take the funicular railway up to the Castle. Climb up the Observation Tower for great views across the city.

    1.00pm

    A spot of lunch

For something up-market, the Castle restaurant serves high-class Slovenian cuisine. For a popular local snack, try burek (a Bosnian-style pastry filled with cheese or meat) from a stall on the market (head for the southeast corner). There are also plenty of cafés in Old Ljubljana.

    2.00pm

    See the sights

Follow Ciril-Metodov trg past the Cathedral and into medieval Old Ljubljana. Wander along as far as Gornji trg, window-shopping as you go. Cross Shoemaker’s Bridge and find your way to the charming Trg francoske revolucije. Look into Plečnik’s Summer Theatre, then stroll up Vegova ulica, passing Baroque buildings and the National Library to Kongresni trg.

    3.30pm
