Introduction
I wrote this book because I wanted to share a powerful technique for handling and regulating intense emotions. I struggled with emotions from an early age, and I would have benefited immensely from an understanding and technique like this when I was a youth. I have been a psychologist in Australia for the past 10 years, and mainly I have worked with children. Often enough mood and behavior difficulties are linked, but interestingly an average adult cannot name more than ten emotions, yet we expect children to behave well knowing that this requires some control and regulation of their emotions. In the past year and a half, I have taken a job that involves working with traumatized children and adults who struggle with emotions on daily basis; they are refugees and asylum seekers who come from different parts of the world.
While working in this environment, I have experienced severe stress and my concerns around vicarious trauma, self-care, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) have made this material even more relevant. I have developed this framework over the past three years, and it has finally transformed into a simple format (a
