Diy Crafts - Levi Hicks
Introduction
Summer is the most rewarding seasons for DIY projects: as the days get longer, you have more hours of light to do those jobs that you couldn’t face in the cold and short winter days; as the weather warms up, you can take your tools outside and enjoy being creative in the open air; as the light gets brighter, you can see all those forgotten corners that need sprucing up around your house and garden, but also many opportunities to add beautiful and useful extras to your daily life. Yet, what really makes the sunny season ideal for DIY is that your projects are not limited to the four walls of your house: your ‘playground’ suddenly becomes limitless, and you can come up with many ideas to improve your garden, to amaze the guests you entertain, to bring a smile on your children’s faces, to enjoy on the beach, or to take with you to the park...
Whether you are a beginner or have many years of DIY under your belt, this book has ideas not just for you, but for your children, for your friends, and even for the little animals that keep us company in summer.
You will find some easy and quick projects for last minute presents as well as bigger ones to keep you busy for a whole day. You will find projects for your garden, for your clothes, to play with, to share with your friends, as well as for your body.
All of the projects in this book are creative and fun to do. All of the projects are explained in detail and easy to make. All of the projects can be done with simple materials and tools that you either already have or can find with no difficulty. But let us not forget our wallets: all the projects in this book are, rest assured, cheap and will save you money.
Chapter 1 - The Outdoor Cinema Screen
http://cdn2-www.momtastic.com/assets/uploads/2011/06/file_167817_0_110629-bkyrd1.jpgThis is great if you have a good projector, good speakers, and a garden. Instead of spending your summer night indoors watching movies, you can have your own personal open-air cinema!
Apart from a projector and speakers, you will need to build your cinema screen. For this, you will need a big white curtain or sheet (in excess of 7 feet 5 inches or 2.2 metres, by 5 feet 5 inches or 1.7 metres), four planks of pinewood, nails, a hammer, a saw, wood finish, 4 metal angle brackets, 16 screws, a screwdriver, a staple gun with staples, a drill, a strong rope (13 feet, or 4 metres should be plenty), and two bricks.
Cut two planks of wood to these measurements: 3 inches (7 cm) wide, 3 inches (7 cm) deep, and 7 feet (2 m) long.
Cut two planks of wood to these measurements: 3 inches (7 cm) wide, 3 inches (7 cm) deep, and 5 feet (1.5 m) long.
Drill two holes into each of the 5-foot long planks; each hole should be 3 inches (7 cm) from the edge.
Apply the wood finish to your planks and leave to dry.
Now, start building the frame for your screen by nailing the four corners of the planks to form a rectangle 7 feet and 6 inches (2.15 m) wide and 5 feet (1.5 m) wide. This means that the shorter planks will have to be nailed to the edge of the longer ones; this is because the frame will need to resist bring pulled vertically by its own weight. Make sure that the holes you have drilled in the 5-foot planks go from the back to the front of the frame, not from outside to inside.
On the inside corner of the frame, attach the metal angle brackets using screws.
Now that the frame is done, it is time to attach the screen. It’s important that it is very smooth. So, carefully follow these instructions.
First, spread the sheet over the frame, and make sure it folds over the back of the frame.
Keeping the sheet or curtain smooth, use the staple gun to secure it to the
