    Losing weight is about establishing a set of changes and shifts that you can maintain for the rest of your life. It’s about developing a new style of eating and a new style of physical activeness that are healthy and inspiring. It’s about replacing unhealthy habits with new habits that contribute to your wellbeing. It requires a determined, positive, and flexible mindset, and a commitment to long-term goals rather than short-term cravings.

    What Doesn’t Work!

    A surprising reality about weight loss is that short-term diets, in hundreds of forms ranging from reasonable to extreme to weird to downright unscientific, rarely help. The scientific consensus is that short-term programs involving food restrictions, calorie limits, and extreme exercise regimens tend to fail and worse, people who follow short-term diets are actually more likely to gain weight in the long term. In fact, repeated dieting is a good predictor for long-term weight gain.

    Many factors make short-term diets ineffective. Some simply have little basis in the science behind weight loss. Others are so extreme that most people cannot stick to them for longer than a few weeks. Some are unpalatable, or difficult to prepare. One major underlying reason, though, makes many diets inherently ineffective: they take a short-term approach to weight loss. It makes sense why this doesn’t work. No matter how fast you lost weight on a diet, there’s no reason to think it will stay off if you go back to whatever you were doing before that caused you to gain the weight in the first place! The science is clear: short-term diets don’t work, long-term lifestyle changes do.

    There are several important mental factors that can also cause problems, no matter how you try to lose weight.
