Lighting Technique 1 – Bokeh Filters

You can use this awesome filter for amazing effects with of anything that has lights involved. For our example we will use taking a photo of a Christmas tree while the tree is lit up at night. On Amazon, bokeh filters start at $25 per set. You can do it with just a little time and effort. You can also make bokeh filters in shapes that interest you instead of purchasing a set of filters that might have shapes you never use.
To make your own bokeh filters you will need a wide aperture lens, cardstock, scissors or a crafting knife to cut the shape out of the cardstock, and tape. First, you want to cut the cardstock to cover the diameter of your lens. In the middle of the circle of cardstock, you will use the scissors or the crafting knife to cut out the shape you desire. After you’ve cut out the shape from the middle, use the tape and attach the new filter onto the lens. Set your camera to its lowest aperture value. You don’t want the lights to be in focus.
